Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

DVD Sales - Ice Age a Little Chilly in Stores?

Five new releases reached the top 30 on the sales chart this week, including Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which took top spot with 2.46 million units sold and $43.62 million in opening week consumer spending at retail. This was enough for first place by a margin of nearly 1 million units; however, that was 44% lower unit sales that The Meltdown sold during its first week of release. It's coming very close to Halloween, which means there are a lot of horror films on this week's list. However, much of these films are of the smaller variety, like Night of the Creeps. Looking at the best of the releases, there are two that jump out at me, both Blu-ray releases. International Details - Number Six for District Nine, Redux

District 9 returned to sixth place with $6.20 million on 2233 screens in 44 markets for a total of $77.12 million international and $192.36 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $1.60 million on 287 screens over the weekend and $1.88 million in total. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Brazil with $865,000 on 204 screens over the weekend for a total of $968,000 and Mexico wasn't as strong with $666,000 on 250 screens, but that was still enough for second place. The film still has a couple markets left to open in, but none are major markets. This will make it hard to reach $100 million internationally, but it could make to $200 million worldwide by this time next week. More...

International Details - Dusk for Ice Age

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell out of the top five this past weekend earning $7.08 million on 3521 screens in 35 markets for a total of $670.44 million internationally and $865.11 million worldwide. It is now the third highest grossing film internationally of all time, while it is 18th place worldwide. That's quite a gap. The film remained in first place in Italy earning $3.14 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.63 million after three. So far the film has earned more than 77% of its worldwide box office internationally, which is a very high percentage, and it will keep creeping higher as its international run comes to a close. International Details - An Interesting Proposal

The Proposal had massive gains this past weekend and just failed to reach the top five with $5.83 million on 2160 screens in 42 markets for a total of $124.60 million internationally and $285.57 million worldwide. It is now the biggest worldwide hit for Sandra Bullock, and it still has a chance to overtake Speed internationally. This week it debuted in third place in Italy with $1.43 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.86 million during its opening, which is much weaker than its performance here. It has yet to open in France, which is key in its quest to overtake Speed, but even if it bombs there and in Japan, it will still hit $300 million worldwide. More...

Funny People, Depressed Box Office

2009 took another hit at the box office over the weekend, bringing in just $125 million. This might seem like a huge amount, but that's 17% lower than last weekend and 18% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has earned $6.43 billion, which is 7.0% more than the running tally from this time last year, and if 2009 can just maintain pace with 2008 for the rest of the year, then the total ticket sales will reach $10 billion for the first time ever. Force to be Reckoned With

As expected, the weekend box office was soft compared to last week, as well as the same weekend last year. That said, it was not as bad as it could have been and all three new releases topped expectations. Overall, total ticket sales were $151 million over the weekend, down 5.8% from last weekend and 16% from last year. Year-to-day, 2009 still has a substantial lead over 2008 at $6.22 billion to $5.76 billion and even the lack of a The Dark Knight type hit won't be enough to close that gap. G-Force showed that 3-D movies are still enough of a novelty to generate good business over the weekend as the kid adventure beat Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the top of the chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. June gave us some unexpected hits in The Proposal and The Hangover, as well as expected hits like Up, not to mention the biggest hit of the year, so far, in Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. However, despite this, 2009 lost a bit of ground to 2008, and this will likely continue this month, as this month last year saw the release of The Dark Knight. This year we have a couple of potential $300 million hits, but nothing likely to perform on that scale. Then again, I only predicted Dark Knight would make $250 million, so we could be surprised again this year. The box office is certainly hot, and is currently running more than 12% ahead of last year's pace. More...

International Details - Lightning Strikes on the International Chart

Black Lightning opened in sixth place internationally with $8.42 million on 798 screens in 5 markets. Those markets include Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. DVD Sales - Ice Age a Little Chilly in Stores?

Five new releases reached the top 30 on the sales chart this week, including Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which took top spot with 2.46 million units sold and $43.62 million in opening week consumer spending at retail. This was enough for first place by a margin of nearly 1 million units; however, that was 44% lower unit sales that The Meltdown sold during its first week of release. Granted, there are some mitigating circumstance here, including the overall decline in DVD sales, as well as the rise in Blu-ray, but it is still troubling. More...

It's coming very close to Halloween, which means there are a lot of horror films on this week's list. However, much of these films are of the smaller variety, like Night of the Creeps. Looking at the best of the releases, there are two that jump out at me, both Blu-ray releases. International Details - Number Six for District Nine, Redux

District 9 returned to sixth place with $6.20 million on 2233 screens in 44 markets for a total of $77.12 million international and $192.36 million. The film opened in first place in South Korea with $1.60 million on 287 screens over the weekend and $1.88 million in total. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Brazil with $865,000 on 204 screens over the weekend for a total of $968,000 and Mexico wasn't as strong with $666,000 on 250 screens, but that was still enough for second place. The film still has a couple markets left to open in, but none are major markets. This will make it hard to reach $100 million internationally, but it could make to $200 million worldwide by this time next week. More...

International Details - Dusk for Ice Age

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell out of the top five this past weekend earning $7.08 million on 3521 screens in 35 markets for a total of $670.44 million internationally and $865.11 million worldwide. It is now the third highest grossing film internationally of all time, while it is 18th place worldwide. That's quite a gap. The film remained in first place in Italy earning $3.14 million on 690 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.63 million after three. So far the film has earned more than 77% of its worldwide box office internationally, which is a very high percentage, and it will keep creeping higher as its international run comes to a close. International Details - An Interesting Proposal

The Proposal had massive gains this past weekend and just failed to reach the top five with $5.83 million on 2160 screens in 42 markets for a total of $124.60 million internationally and $285.57 million worldwide. It is now the biggest worldwide hit for Sandra Bullock, and it still has a chance to overtake Speed internationally. This week it debuted in third place in Italy with $1.43 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.86 million during its opening, which is much weaker than its performance here. It has yet to open in France, which is key in its quest to overtake Speed, but even if it bombs there and in Japan, it will still hit $300 million worldwide. More...

Funny People, Depressed Box Office

2009 took another hit at the box office over the weekend, bringing in just $125 million. This might seem like a huge amount, but that's 17% lower than last weekend and 18% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has earned $6.43 billion, which is 7.0% more than the running tally from this time last year, and if 2009 can just maintain pace with 2008 for the rest of the year, then the total ticket sales will reach $10 billion for the first time ever. Force to be Reckoned With

As expected, the weekend box office was soft compared to last week, as well as the same weekend last year. That said, it was not as bad as it could have been and all three new releases topped expectations. Overall, total ticket sales were $151 million over the weekend, down 5.8% from last weekend and 16% from last year. Year-to-day, 2009 still has a substantial lead over 2008 at $6.22 billion to $5.76 billion and even the lack of a The Dark Knight type hit won't be enough to close that gap. Weekend Estimates: G-Force Conquers Potter

G-Force showed that 3-D movies are still enough of a novelty to generate good business over the weekend as the kid adventure beat Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the top of the chart, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. June gave us some unexpected hits in The Proposal and The Hangover, as well as expected hits like Up, not to mention the biggest hit of the year, so far, in Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. However, despite this, 2009 lost a bit of ground to 2008, and this will likely continue this month, as this month last year saw the release of The Dark Knight. This year we have a couple of potential $300 million hits, but nothing likely to perform on that scale. Then again, I only predicted Dark Knight would make $250 million, so we could be surprised again this year. The box office is certainly hot, and is currently running more than 12% ahead of last year's pace. More...

Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.
