With Thanksgivings just around the corner, there are a lot of releases coming out this week.
You see, every time this year there's a media report that the day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year.
However, this is not true.
Christmas Eve is actually the biggest shopping day of the year (talk about last minute gifts).
Even so, Thanksgiving is still a massively important time of the year and there's no surprise that studios are trying to get out as many gift ideas as possible just in time for the holiday rush.
With that in mind, there are several full series sets coming out this week, including DVD Pick of the Week contender Get Smart - The Complete Series - Buy Direct.
However, when it comes to the winner, there's really only one choice and that is Looney Tunes - Golden Collection - Volume Four - Buy from Amazon.

There were not that many releases from
this week's crop to chart, but it was a newcomer taking top spot as
She's the Man lead both the rental and the sales chart this week. It earned $5.57 million after one week of rentals while the sales figures were not released as usual.

Things are finally starting to pick up from the doldrums of the past two weeks and things should continue to speed up as over the next few weeks we start seeing last year's shows start to hit DVD in anticipation of the upcoming season. This week it is a TV on DVD release that takes the DVD Pick of the Week, but it is not a returning show, but a short-lived one.
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. - The Complete Series takes the prize with
Film Noir Classic Collection -
Volume 3 earning an honorable mention.

Only one film mentioned in Friday's preview was able to beat expectations to any real degree, and this pushed this week's box office down 19.5% from last weekend.
However, at $114 million it was still 31.5% higher than last year, which is more important.
Even better news, 2006 has moved ahead of 2005's pace, albeit by a narrow 1% margin, meaning ticket sales are still slower than a year ago.

There's little doubt that Ice Age: The Meltdown will repeat as box office champion, the real question is how far will it fall. Also of interest, which of the new releases will come in second and how many of the four newcomers will finish in the top five?

For the first time in a long, long time we have a bona fides hit topping the charts. Not only did
Ice Age: The Meltdown beat almost all expectations, but it single-handedly brought the 2006 box office out of its slump. The overall box office was $142 million, nearly half of which came from that one movie. This represents a 29.7% increase from last weekend and a 34% increase from last year. Year-to-date, 2006 is still behind 2005, but the deficit was cut in half to just 1%.

We have the first event movie of the year coming out this weekend. Yes, I realize I said that when V for Vendetta came out, but this time I mean it. In all seriousness, if Ice Age: The Meltdown doesn't have the best opening of the year, then the 2006 box office is pretty much sunk.

With the first event movie of the year opening this Friday, we're having a massive, triple-sized contest featuring three prizes!
Winners will be selected for three predictions, each associated with a different movie opening this weekend.
The rules are the same: whoever comes closest to predicting each film's opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win the prize pack associated with that movie.
The prizes are a King Kong Prize Pack (T-shirt, Hat and DVD), ATL Prize Pack (Poster, Baseball Jersey, and Tank Top), and Drawing Restraint 9 Prize Pack (Signed Poster and the Soundtrack).
To win the ATL prize pack you must predict ATL's opening box office.
To win the Drawing Restraint 9 Prize Pack you must predict Drawing Restraint 9's opening box office.
All of which makes sense.
However, to win the King Kong Prize Pack, you must predict the opening weekend for Ice Age: The Meltdown.
Entries must be received by 10am, Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

This is a not as busy a month as it initially looks. Granted, there are 18 movies on this month's list, but there are five weekends, or at least five Fridays. Also, every week there's at least one film that may or may not be getting a truly wide release. Considering the level of competition, I'm leaning against any of five such films opening in more than 2000 theatres. On the plus side, we should see the
first $100 million movie of 2006 open this month, and perhaps even see
two movies reach that milestone.
