Twelve is the New One

April 23rd, 2005

Ocean Twelve easily took top spot on both the DVD, VHS rental charts as well as the DVD sales charts. On the rental side the sequel brought in $10.10 million in DVD rentals and $1.25 million in VHS rentals, nearly double its nearest competitor. On the sales side exact numbers are unknown, but it was so popular that the original rode the wave into the top ten. More...

DVD Releases for April 12, 2005

April 11th, 2005

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section including this week's winners, which we'll get to in a moment. But first I have to say this is a really bad week for DVD releases, there's a least 6 that are worth picking up and choosing just one for the pick of the week is nearly impossible. But I did narrow the choices down to two, Hotel Rwanda - Buy from Amazon and Sledge Hammer! - Season Two - Buy from Amazon... and Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Vol. 1 - Buy from Amazon. The Invader ZIM - House Box Set - Buy from Amazon looks too cool to pass up as well, but that's it. Ok, renting DiG! - Buy from Amazon wouldn't be a mistake either. More...

France's $5 Million Baby

April 3rd, 2005

Million Dollar Baby performed brilliantly this week earning $8.8 million for an international total of $60 million, placing fourth on the international box office charts. In France the film dominated the marketplace with $4.94 million on 450 screens and in Germany the film earned $760,000 in semi-limited release (120 screens) for the best per screen average in the market. On the other hand, the film flopped in Slovakia where it missed the top ten in its debut. On the holdover front, the multi-Oscar winning front saw its weekend haul climb by 20% in Spain to $980,000 and it's still doing well in Australia, Italy and South Korea. More...

Twelve Tops the Best of the Rest

February 27th, 2005

Ocean's Twelve may have dropped out of the top five, but it is still going strong with $4.5 million on 1400 screens in 35 markets for an international box office of $225.8 million so far. No new openings means the heist film had to rely on holdovers likes its $2.5 million during its third weekend in the U.K. and $1.4 million during its fifth week of release in Japan, finishing second in both those markets. A Hero's Welcome

August 30th, 2004

We had a surprise number one at the box office this weekend, and add to that a few holdovers that held up better than expected and the weekend wasn't as bad as it could have been. It was still down by 12.1% from last weekend, but was nearly flat with last year up just 1.24%. Granted, this time last year it was the Labor Day Long Weekend, which even as the slowest long weekend of the year will throw off the comparison by a little bit. Year to date 2004 continues to see its lead shrink and it now sits at just over 4%, barely more than ticket price inflation. More...

August Ends with a Whimper

August 27th, 2004

While it may look like a busy weekend at first glance as there are four wide releases, their average theatre count is under 2000. Also, three of the four are receiving some of the harshest responses from the critics seen this summer. Because of that, there should be a real drop at the overall box office this weekend, a downturn that won't end till mid-October, give or take a week. More...

2004 Summer Preview - Part 5: August

August 1st, 2004

August is a weird month. While summer lasts till September 21st for normal people, in Hollywood summer just sort of ends halfway through. There aren't enough of the holidays left for films that open in late August to take advantage of. So a lot of also-rans get dumped at this time of year. However, earlier in the month there's still a few potential $100 million movies, plus one of the later movies might surprise us as well. More...
