People Embrace Fantastic Films on the Per Theater Chart

Broken Embraces opened on top of the per theater chart with an impressive average of $53,556 in two theaters, while The Fantastic Mr. Fox was in a close second place with an average $50,878 in four theaters. The overall box office leader, The Twilight Saga - New Moon, placed third with $35,497 in more than 4,000 theaters. Precious saw its best numbers of its run so far, pulling in nearly $11 million in just over 600 theaters for an average of $17,300. The Sun opened with $11,588 in one theater while The Blind Side opened with an average of $10,971 in more than 3,000 theaters.

There were more than half a dozen other new limited releases and one of them, Bad Lieutenant - Port of Call New Orleans, nearly reached the $10,000 mark with an average of $9,089. Red Cliff opened reasonably well with an average of $6,552 in two theaters, but I don't expect that will be enough to encourage enough theater owners to book it over the coming weeks. Fix earned $5,951 in one theater while Kurbaan earned an average of $4,864 in 83. Mammoth was right behind with $4,531 in one theater. The Missing Person struggled with just $2,715 in one theater, while Defamation earned an average of $1,181 in four.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple Per Theater Charts alumni:

• Boondock Saints 2 - All Saints Day has peaked at the box office but still managed to reach $3 million early in the weekend and is now halfway to $4 million.
• Good Hair just missed $4 million after last weekend, but it made it there this week.
• An Education topped $4 million over the weekend and it should get to $5 million by this time next week.
• Coco Before Chanel manged to make it all the way to $5 million, but that's likely as far as it will go.
• Precious still hasn't expanded wide, but it has made $20 million during its limited release run. Hitting further milestones is practically guaranteed at this point, while it has an excellent chance at expanding enough to graduate to a wide release.
