The Directors Guild of America handed out their nominations for Feature Films last week and Documentaries today. No, I have no idea why they split up their announcements. Usually, there's a lot of overlap between the DGAs and the Oscars, but that's not the case this year, so we again have some surprises.

New releases this week are dominated by one title, Brave. The second best selling title according to Amazon.com is Lawrence of Arabia, which is a film that should be in everyone's collection, but as a catalog title, it likely won't sell a huge number of units. The third best selling title according to Amazon.com is Duck Dynasty: Season One. That's not a good sign. Fortunately, Brave is clearly Pick of the Week material with the Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack battling for that honor.

There were three new releases that topped $10,000 on the per theater chart. Detropia led the way with $17,414 in one theater. It should expand, but as a documentary, it will likely not expand wide. Hello I Must Be Going earned an average of $11,952 in two theaters, while Keep the Lights On was right behind with an average of $11,115 in five theaters.

Cosmopolis led the way on the per theater chart with an excellent opening of $70,000 in three theaters for an average of $23,446. Given its reviews, I'm not sure it will do well as it expands. Robot and Frank was also strong with an average of $17,770 in two theaters, while Compliance was right behind with $16,427 in one theater. Ek Tha Tiger didn't quite reach the $10,000 club over the weekend with an average of $9,655, but it was a Wednesday release, so had it opened on Friday, it likely would have easily made the cut.

The Dark Knight Rises led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $36,532, which is excellent for an ultra-wide release. The Queen of Versailles was next with an average of $17,109 in three theaters. This does show some potential to expand, but as a documentary, it likely won't get too far. Space Station bounced back into the $10,000 club with an average of $11,540 in two theaters with Deep Sea 3-D right behind with $10,590 in one theater. The final film to crack $10,000 was The Imposter with $10,202 in its lone theater.

Not only has The Dark Knight Rises scared off the competition in terms of wide releases, there are almost no limited releases coming out this week either. Of the four releases, two are documentaries, one is a 3D samurai film, and the other an ensemble. I don't think any of them will earn a real measure of mainstream success, but The Queen of Versailles will likely perform the best this weekend.
