DVD Sales - Blades Glide into First Place

September 9th, 2007

New releases were not that plentiful on the sales chart this week, but they did take the top two spots with Blades of Glory leading the way. Over its first week of release, the film sold 905,000 units for a total of $14.48 million in sales. More...

DVD Releases for August 28, 2007

August 27th, 2007

The last week in summer brings with it a mixed bag of DVD releases, very few of which are top-notch releases. There are a few that are worth picking up though, and two that are clear contenders for DVD Pick of the Week: Heroes - The Complete First Season and Heroes - The Complete First Season - HD-DVD edition. This is the first time a high definition release has won the DVD Pick of the Week, and while the format war will drag on at least one more year, we should start seeing more and more releases take the top prize before that happens. Spider-Man Sinks Pirates in Opening Salvo of the Summer Battle

May 7th, 2007

Now that's what the Summer is all about. With Spider-man 3, the blockbuster season got off to a record-breaking start and that lifted the overall box office to amazing heights. Last weekend was one of the worst weekends in a long time, but Spider-man 3 alone earned nearly twice as much as the previous week's total box office and, adding in the holdovers, the 3-day take of $190 million was 144% more than last weekend, and already ranks as the fourth-biggest single weekend in history with reports for some movies still to come in (see the full list). More importantly, it is 72% more than the same weekend last year. Granted, last Summer got off to a slow start, but this is still a huge year-to-year increase and a very good omen for the season as a whole. More...

April Ends with an Ugh

May 1st, 2007

Wow. That was one of the worst weekends I can remember. There was almost nothing worth celebrating as the overall box office dipped by 12% from last weekend to $78 million. That's nearly 24% lower than the same weekend last year and probably the worst weekend in more than a year. (We'll have more details on that when the box office chart is certified later this week.) The only silver lining I can think of is a possible reason for this massive dip. In my opinion, a lot of people who thought about going to the movies this weekend likely said, "Let's wait a week and catch Spider-man 3 instead." I can't prove this happened, but this time next weekend if Spider-man 3 has broken records, we'll know that it is a likely scenario. More...

Movie Website Updates for April 22 - April 28, 2007

April 29th, 2007

It's a slow week in terms of the cream-of-the-crop sites. There are a few that look like they could be award-worthy once they have a few more updates, but for the most part this week we have a collection that is rather average. There was one stand-out site, Evan Almighty - Official Site, and it was the only choice for the Weekly Website Award. More...

Calm Before the Storm

April 26th, 2007

It's the final weekend before the summer blockbuster season and it appears that while everyone is excited about Spider-man 3, almost no one is paying attention to this week's new releases. This could result in the worst weekend of the year and there is a possibility that no film will reach $10 million. More...

Movie Website Updates for April 15 - April 21, 2007

April 21st, 2007

There were a few new flash sites to launch this week, but while there might be a couple future winners among those sites, it was a long time resident on this week's list that walked away with top honors. That site was Hot Fuzz - Official Site, which probably could have won several weeks ago if the features were added all at once. However, it's much better to spread the updates out in order to get people coming back week after week. More...

2007 Preview: April

April 1st, 2007

April is an interesting month to open a movie. Interesting, but not a particularly good month. This year it does start with Easter, but that's traditionally not a strong long weekend. Only one movie has topped $40 million over that weekend and only one other has cracked $30 million. Worst still, it's jammed right up against May, the start of the summer blockbusters season. Ironically, the closer you get to this most lucrative time of year, the tougher it is for films to make a buck. No movie wants to open the weekend before Spider-man 3, for instance. Overall, there are a few hits to be found in the month, and a few misses, but nothing that really stands out above the pack. More...
