It is a surprisingly strong week on the home market with two $100 million hits, Kung Fu Panda 2 on Blu-ray Combo Pack or Rise of the Planet of the Apes on Blu-ray, both of which are contenders for pick of the week. There are also several smaller releases that are also contenders for that title like The Guild: Season Five on DVD. But in the end, I gave that honor to Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame on Blu-ray.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame opened with a per theater average of $17,533 in three theaters, which is very good, especially for a September release. However, it wasn't able to maintain this average the following week and it quickly expanded beyond what its word-of-mouth could handle. This is not a positive sign. Is the film flawed and that's what prevented it finding a larger audience. Or is it a genre film with too small a target audience? Does it deserve to perform better on the home market?

There are two saturation level releases coming out next week, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Both have a shot at $200 million in total, but the latter should start much faster, so it is the target film in this week's contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Detective Dee and The Mystery of the Phantom Flame on DVD.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Detective Dee and The Mystery of the Phantom Flame on DVD.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

There is a lot of excitement when it comes to specialty films and potential Awards Season players, because it's time for the Toronto International Film Festival. Unfortunately for those not in Toronto, your choices are a lot more limited. Fortunately for those not in Toronto, you are not in Toronto. (I'm Canadian, so I'm constitutionally obligated to make fun of Toronto.) There are a few new limited releases earning good reviews, but far more that critics are a lot less kind to, and none seem destined for significant box office success.

The per theater chart is nearly empty and only Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame topping $10,000 over the three-day portion of the weekend. It's average from Friday through Sunday was $17,533 in three theaters. Bodyguard earned an average of $9,813 in 88 theaters over the three-day portion of the weekend, but crossed over the $10,000 mark if you include Monday. It was even more impressive if you take into account its Wednesday and Thursday numbers.

The selection of limited releases is not great with only one, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. On the other hand, there are three films opening in more than 100 theaters, none of which are likely to become hits. It could be a really soft weekend on the per theater chart. Fortunately, Awards Season is not too far away.
