Synopsis
Clara, a 65-year-old widow and retired music critic, is the last resident of the Aquarius, one of the few buildings of its age and character that remains in a rapidly changing seaside Recife neighborhood. Now that the other apartments have been swept up by a company with ambitious plans for redevelopment, pressures to move on surround Clara from all sides. But she has pledged to leave only upon death, and will engage in a cold war with the developers to keep a home that has been a silent witness to her entire life. The resulting confrontation is mysterious, frightening and nerve-wracking, tingeing even Clara’s most familiar routines with the tension of a thriller.

The Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced last night and thus the 2016 Awards Season begins. There were a few surprises and some snubs to discuss, but for the most part, there’s not a lot nominations that broke the established narrative. It’s because there isn’t really an established narrative. This means films that earn nominations here have a much better chance of doing well going forward and Moonlight looks like it could rise up as a result.

Shin Godzilla had a number of special screenings over the weekend and its daily theater count ranged from 26 to 311. This made a huge mess of the theater average chart. I guess adding up the averages for the individual days would be the best, giving it an average of $5,271. However, even that doesn’t take into account the many theaters which only had limited showings on the single day they played the film. It’s a mess.
As for films that are a lot easier to deal with, Miss Hokusai topped that chart with an average of $12,262 in two theaters. This is another hit for GKIDS. Certain Women was right behind with an average of $12,180 in five theaters. Christine was playing in just one theater, earning $11,744.

There are a ton of limited releases earning great reviews this week. Perhaps too many of them. Some, like Shin Godzilla, have more popular appeal, but many of them, like Tower, are aiming for Oscar Glory.
