Theater counts: Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible cruise into a combined 8,267 theaters
May 22, 2025
It was a stellar weekend at the domestic box office for newcomer Final Destination: Bloodlines as the latest installment scored $51.6 million in its debut, sealing it as the fifth-biggest weekend of 2025, while topping the opening weekend earnings for the franchise. It will be a short-lived reign at the top for Bloodlines this Memorial Day weekend, however, as a duo of heavy hitters are set to make their big screen debuts.
Beginning its run in a whopping 4,410 theaters this weekend is the live-action/animated feature, Lilo & Stitch. The film follows a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive canine-like alien who helps to mend her broken family. The large theatrical footprint puts the film just out of the top 20 widest releases ever to open in domestic theaters, tying another animated film—2018’s Incredibles 2 at number 22 on the list of widest debuts. Dean Fleischer Camp helms his third film, with the most recent being another live-action/animated hybrid film, 2022’s Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Playing the part of Lilo is the young actress Maia Kealoha, while Chris Sanders voices the animatronic Stitch.
The long-awaited arrival of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is here. Tom Cruise is back for the follow-up to 2023’s Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One as super spy Ethan Hunt, who is going for broke and defying death in the latest chapter in the long and storied franchise. Cruise is once again teamed up with director Christopher McQuarrie, who not only has a successful working relationship with the actor on the Mission: Impossible films, but has also produced together on mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick, a film that still holds the record for widest release, opening in 4,735 theaters back in late May of 2022. Final Reckoning will begin its run in 3,857 theaters.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is the latest from Angel Studios, with the Neal McDonough drama The Last Rodeo. The film follows an aging retired bull rider, along with his daughter, who encounter a dilemma that can only be rectified by entering, and winning, a bull-riding competition. Sarah Jones and Forrest Gump’s Mykelti Williamson co-star in the film. We will update the theater count once it is available.
Expanding wide this weekend is the Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd comedy, Friendship. The movie has made over $2 million from limited showings since it debuted on May 9, and looks to add significant funds to that as it bumps up to 1,055 locations this weekend.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is the current box office leader, as Final Destination: Bloodlines holds steady with its availability in 3,523 movie houses. Occupying the fourth-place spot is Thunderbolts*, which just crossed the $160 million mark on Wednesday, losing 780 locations this week but still playing in a solid 3,180 venues. Lastly, Sinners can still be seen on the big screen, showing in 2,632 cinemas this weekend.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we see the release of martial arts feature, Karate Kid: Legends. The film stars Karate Kid alum Ralph Macchio and martial arts movie legend Jackie Chan in the latest film in the Karate Kid franchise, which is projected to land in approximately 3,500 North American theaters.
