Theater Counts: Snow White enchants 4,200 theaters in its opening weekend
March 20, 2025
Newcomer Novocaine knocked Mickey 17 off the number one spot at the domestic box office last weekend, earning $8.81 million in its three-day start. The film has since accrued another $2.6 million and currently enjoys a six-day total of $11.46 million. However, its place at the top will be short-lived as Disney’s Snow White is set to enchant 4,200 theaters this weekend.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, Disney’s live-action reimagining of the 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, opens this weekend for all. The musical fantasy film directed by Marc Webb stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White, the princess who joins forces with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother the Evil Queen, played by Gal Gadot.
Also making its debut this weekend is the Barry Levinson-directed biographical crime drama The Alto Knights. The film stars Robert De Niro in a dual role as 1950s mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Once the best of friends, their petty jealousies and betrayals put them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia—and America—forever. Alto Knights will start out in 2,651 locations.
Showing in 1,136 movie houses this weekend is the RLJ Entertainment psychological horror Ash. The film follows a woman who wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events.
Beginning in 971 theaters is the crime thriller Locked. When Eddie (Bill Skarsgård) breaks into a luxury SUV, he steps into a deadly trap set by William (Anthony Hopkins), a self-proclaimed vigilante delivering his own brand of twisted justice. With no means of escape, Eddie must fight to survive in a ride where escape is an illusion, survival is a nightmare, and justice shifts into high gear.
Magazine Dreams is also debuting this weekend in 815 locations. The sports drama follows Killian Maddox as he's consumed by his dream of becoming a world-famous bodybuilder and one day gracing the cover of fitness magazines. Beneath his tenacious pursuit of superstardom lies a desperate, aching need for human connection. As he battles both the limits of his physical body and his own inner demons, Magazine Dreams explores the lengths one man will go to in his haunting quest for recognition in a world that often overlooks him.
Rounding out the top five this weekend is Novocaine, the current box office leader, playing in 3,369 theaters as it heads into its second weekend. Captain America: Brave New World remains widely available in its sixth weekend, playing in 2,900 theaters. Last weekend’s newcomer, Black Bag takes the fourth place spot, playing in 2,713 locations. Lastly, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is available in 2,703 movie houses.
Looking ahead to next weekend, we once again see a wide array of films make their way into theaters, with the two biggest debuting films looking to be the action thriller A Working Man starring Jason Statham and the Blumhouse psychological horror The Woman in the Yard. Those films are projected to open in 3,000 and 2,800 theaters, respectively.
