Theater counts: Deadpool and Wolverine comfortably in control heading into its second weekend

It was a massive opening weekend at the worldwide box office for newcomer Deadpool & Wolverine. The dynamic duo turned up a jaw-dropping $211 million in domestic receipts while collecting just over $233 million from overseas viewings. After six days, the sequel is creeping up on $600 million, currently enjoying $590 million in global sales. Although three new wide releases hit movie screens this weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine are poised to stay in the driver’s seat atop of the box office chart.

New this weekend is the latest from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan with the release of the psychological thriller Trap. Starting out in 3,181 theaters, the film follows a father and teen daughter who attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event. Josh Hartnett stars in the film. It’s the actor’s first role since his appearance in last year’s blockbuster hit, Oppenheimer.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the long-awaited Harold and the Purple Crayon. The film, starring Zachary Levi, is based on the beloved 1955 children’s book of the same name but actually serves as a sequel. The adventurous Harold is all grown up; he can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life. Harold and the Purple Crayon will debut in 3,325 cinemas.

Lastly, the faith-based prison drama, The Firing Squad also opens this weekend. The film is based on the true story of three Christian prisoners who, facing execution in an Indonesian prison, find themselves transformed through faith while igniting a spiritual revolution within the prison camp. Cuba Gooding Jr., James Barrington, and Kevin Sorbo lead the cast. No official theater count has been given for the movie, but we will update it as soon as received.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current box office champ and widest release in Deadpool and Wolverine, adding 20 locations to its opening count, available in 4,230 theaters. Occupying the second place spot with 4,009 locations is former chart topper in Twisters, and finally, $300-million-domestic-earner Despicable Me 4 can still be seen in a respectable 3,369 movie houses.

Looking ahead to next week, we see another three wide releases make their theatrical debuts. It Ends With Us, the film based on the popular Colleen Hoover novel and starring Blake Lively, is set to arrive in approximately 3,200 venues. Also hitting the big screen for the first time are action-comedy Borderlands and supernatural-horror Cuckoo. The former will begin its run in approximately 3,000 movie houses.
