Theater counts: Scream and Belle debut but Spider-Man retains its grip

After an 11-year hiatus, Ghostface is back, terrifying the townspeople of Woodsboro. The first film in the Scream franchise not to be directed by Wes Craven, Scream (colloquially known as Scream 5) is helmed by the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, both of whom previously directed 2014’s Devil’s Due, and 2019’s Ready or Not. Through its first four films, between 1996 and 2011, the franchise has earned just over $600 million worldwide. The latest installment, which had a $24-million production budget, brings back franchise veterans Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell along with a cast of new faces. Scream will open in 3,664 theaters. Also opening in wide release this week is the Japanese animated science fantasy film Belle. The film, which was the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2021, is set to arrive in an estimated 1,300 locations.

For at least one more week however, Spider-Man: No Way Home leads our theater count chart despite dipping below 4,000 theaters for the first time, coming in this week at 3,925 locations. Currently, the latest Spider-Man enjoys a domestic total of $675 million and over $867 million overseas. The film has charted its way into the single digits on numerous record lists since its release in mid-December.

Rounding out the top five this week is Sing 2 at 3,581 locations, last week’s newcomer, The 355, keeping its 3,145 theater count from its opening week, and The King’s Man in 2,510 movie houses. Also of note, a recognizable title once again lands on our list this week. Venom: Let There be Carnage will be showing in 1,435 locations this week.

Looking ahead to next week we see the release of Universal Pictures’s western drama, Redeeming Love. The romantic drama from director D.J. Caruso and based on the novel by Francine Rivers is a story of romance set amidst the harsh realities of the California Gold Rush of 1850. The film, starring Abigail Cowen, Tom Lewis and Logan Marshall-Green is set to arrive in an estimated 1,800 theaters. Also opening next weekend is The King’s Daughter. The film starring Pierce Brosnan and Kaya Scodelario is expected to launch in an estimated 1,000 locations.
