Weekend estimates: Encanto holds top spot on slow post-Thanksgiving weekend

December 5, 2021

Encanto

Encanto will do enough this weekend to hold on to top spot at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With a projected $12.739 million this time around, Disney’s animated adventure will end the weekend with around $58 million in total domestically. It will be down 53% from the Friday–Sunday portion of Thanksgiving—a little stronger than Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which will be off 57% in its third weekend. Afterlife will take in $10.35 million this weekend, according to Sony, for $102.2 million to date.

Here’s how the weekend looks as of Sunday morning…

There are a couple of stand-out films this weekend. Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers is having an extended special engagement through Fathom Events and will land in fourth place for the weekend with $4.1 million. By the end of Sunday, it is expected to have racked up $9 million over five days. Meanwhile, Dune will be down just 13% this weekend, per Warner Bros., to $1.81 million. Its domestic total now stands at $104.6 million.

Those result helps to make up for a very soft weekend in general, with overall box office roughly halved compared to the Friday–Sunday portion of the Thanksgiving holiday. The good news is that we’ll have a new potential blockbuster every weekend between now and the end of the year. Fingers crossed, that should help us to end the year on a relatively high note.
