Theater Counts: Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and In the Heights hop into theaters this weekend
June 10, 2021
Two wide releases arrive in theaters this weekend to challenge the horror films that have dominated the box office charts the past two weeks. After stellar openings for A Quiet Place: Part II two weeks ago, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It last week, the films opening wide this week couldn't be more of a contrast. The long awaited Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway makes its entrance after a series of release date changes. The sequel from Sony Pictures will open in 3,346 theaters. The original Peter Rabbit earned just north of $347 million worldwide back in 2018. Getting a jump on the weekend is Warner Bros’, In The Heights as it opens today, Thursday. The musical, directed by John M. Chu and produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda, will open in an estimated 3,400 theaters while also being available to stream on HBO Max. Early reports have the film tracking around $20 million in its opening weekend.
Of our confirmed counts, A Quiet Place: Part II tops the chart this week with 3,515 locations, with Universal Pictures’s Spirit Untamed heading into its second weekend with 3,394 theaters.
Lionsgate will release The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard on Wednesday. The original film starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson earned $21 million from 3,377 theaters in its first weekend before going on to gross $183 million worldwide. The studio hasn’t reported an estimate for the sequel yet.
Opening in limited theaters this week is Queen Bees, which features an all star cast including Ellen Burstyn, James Caan, Ann-Margaret and Jane Curtain. The film from Gravitas Ventures opens in 500 locations. Also opening limited this week is IFC Films’ Holler. The coming-of-age drama starring Jessica Barden opens in 31 theaters.
