Streaming Releases: These Releases are the Cat’s Meow
June 19, 2020
There’s a good mix of movies and TV shows on this week’s list. A Whisker Away and Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen should please niche audiences. Love, Victor is based on a popular movie, while the popularity of cooking shows should give Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi: Season 1 a boost.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a co-pilot for an airliner, whose flight is hijacked by terrorists. This film has some of the loudest pre-release buzz on this week’s list, but its reviews are merely good and not great.
Netflix
The documentary looks at trans representation in movies over the past 100 plus years. It has some of the best reviews on this week’s list—good enough to get it some Awards Season buzz had it opened in theaters in the fall and not on Netflix now.
Netflix
Sofia Carson stars as April, a self-centered dancer who, after blowing an audition on Broadway, has to go home and live with her father, where she reluctantly agrees to coach a squad of young misfits for a big competition. It’s a kids movie, and you can tell. It’s not a bad one, so I don’t think parents will regret watching it with their kids, but it doesn’t have a lot of real crossover appeal.
YouTube Premium
Artists, musicians, poets, novelists, playwrights, journalists, radio hosts, gamers, charity workers, costume designers, rabbis and even a sign language tour guide are the subjects of this eccentric, whimsical documentary. It is available for free on YouTube, so if you have the time, you can check it out.
Netflix
This movie is based on the real life events involving anti-Castro terrorists operating from Florida and the counter-terrorists Castro sent to stop them. That’s an amazing story and the cast is incredible. It’s too bad the reviews don’t live up to its premise and cast.
Netflix
An anime movie about a high school girl with a crush on her classmate. In order to get close to him, she transforms into a cat. Netflix has a great track record when it comes to anime, even though they insist on binge-watching as the only way to watch a show.
TV Shows
Netflix
The first part of this series debuted in February and it earned reviews that were good, but not great. If you liked the show, then there’s no reason to not at least check out the first episode of the second part.
Hulu
A TV spin-off of Love, Simon. This was originally going to be a Disney+ TV show, but the studio decided it was a better fit for Hulu. The reviews are excellent, so hopefully it will find an audience on that platform.
Netflix
Gabriel Iglesias stars as a teacher in this sitcom. It has been compared to Welcome Back Kotter, both positively and negatively. In other words, some critics think this show has the same warm charm, while others think it is dated.
Netflix
The latest TV show from Ryan Murphy is another high school soap opera of sorts. Its reviews are mixed, but if you are a fan of his previous shows, then it is worth your time to check out an episode or two.
Hulu
Padma Lakshmi is best known for her hosting duties on Top Chef. In this show, she travels the country looking at immigrant communities and how their style of food influenced American cuisine. The show is earning impressive reviews and if you are a fan of cooking shows, then it is worth checking out.
