Streaming Releases: The Doctor Will See You Now
June 5, 2020
This is not a strong week for streaming releases. The first week of the month tends to be dominated by releases of movies and TV shows that are sometimes decades old, but are available on a particular streaming service for the first time. Actual new releases are pushed to the side as a result. This week, the biggest and best new release is Shirley on Hulu, but I also wanted to shine the spotlight on an older release that is worth your time and money, Doc Martin. It is free on Amazon Prime.

Netflix
The film’s Tomatometer Score is 0%. Skip it.
Hulu
Arriving on Hulu this weekend, simultaneously with a limited theatrical release, this thriller is based on real events from the life of Shirley Jackson (Elisabeth Moss), author of many novels and short stories, including The Haunting of Hill House. The arrival of newlyweds upends her meticulous routine and heightens tensions in her already tempestuous relationship with her philandering husband. The middle-aged couple, prone to ruthless barbs and copious afternoon cocktails, begins to toy mercilessly with the naïve young couple at their door. This film has some of the best reviews on this week’s list with a Tomatometer Score in the 90%-positive range and an average score of nearly eight out of ten. If it isn’t playing in a theater near you, then it is certainly worth watching on Hulu.
Netflix
This show started out well, but its quality completely collapsed during season two, and the fourth and final season isn’t worth checking out for fans of the first season. Most of them likely gave up on the show already.
Apple TV+
Celebrities read letters written to them by people who were deeply affected by their works. These celebrities include scientists, athletes, and entertainers, so there’s a wide array of people involved. There are not a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but the ones there are positive. So if you want to watch Jane Goodall and others read letters they’ve received, check it out.
Amazon Prime (Acorn TV)
This is an older show; the first season came out in 2004. However, it is a great show and it is worth checking out. You can watch it for free on Amazon Prime.
Netflix
A reality TV show, but of the mostly-harmless, rather than soul-crushing type. Its reviews are good, so if you like makeovers, then this show is worth watching.
