Streaming Releases: Still Here to Entertain You

The list of new releases on streaming services leans heavily towards the TV side of things this week, with just one movie, I’m No Longer Here, compared to eight TV shows. That movie is earning outstanding reviews, as are a handful of TV shows like Central Park, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Ramy.

A teenage leader of a small Colombian gang has to leave his home and go to New York City, but he longs to return. The film has 100% positive reviews with an average critics' score of 7.6 out of 10, so it is certainly worth your time if you have Netflix. It is too small of a film to drive new subscribers, on the other hand.
Apple TV+
From Loren Bouchard, creator of Bob’s Burgers. That alone was enough to get me excited about this show and fortunately, the reviews live up to my expectations.

An anime show set in a world where the poor are abused and even experimented on by the magic-using ruling class. The protagonist is a lizarman who is immune to magic and hunts magic users looking for clues to his past. The reviews on My Anime List are excellent, but Netflix believes in the bingeing model so much that they only release anime shows after the season is complete. I hate that practice.

The fifth and final season of this reboot. I wasn’t a fan of the original show and most critics agree that this version isn’t worth watching.

A true-crime documentary series about Jeffrey Epstein. There are a lot of pitfalls a show like this must avoid and the critics mostly agree that the creators did a good job avoiding them. It’s not exploitative, nor does it peddle in conspiracy theories, but it also doesn’t do a good job at explaining the big picture. The show doesn’t talk about the power structures still in place that allowed someone like Jeffrey Epstein to continue to have access to powerful people, despite being convicted of sex crimes against children. That seems like a missed opportunity.

The seventh and final season of this show hit ABC on the 27th and Hulu on the 28th. I’ve been a big fan of this show from the beginning and the season premiere was excellent. It is one of only a handful of shows I still watch every week, so it will be sad to see it go.

Ramy Youssef plays a fictionalized version of himself, a first-generation Egyptian-American living in New Jersey. The show has some of the best reviews on this week’s list and it certainly worth checking out.

This reality TV show stars Phil Rosenthal, who travels the world experiencing other cultures’ food. It’s relaxing to watch, which will be a selling point to many given the current situation.

Out of all of the new releases on this week’s list, this one was the one I was most looking forward to seeing. So it is greatly disappointing to see its deeply mediocre reviews. Most critics agree that the show just isn’t funny; it certainly isn’t funny as it should be given its pedigree.
