International Box Office: Sonic Completes Threepeat
March 5, 2020
Sonic The Hedgehog is unstoppable on the international chart earning first place for the third weekend in a row. This past weekend, it pulled in $26.8 million in 62 markets for totals of $137.2 million internationally and $265.8 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, but did open very well in both Indonesia and Poland at $2 million and $1.1 million respectively. The film has already earned enough to break even and it is quickly becoming one of Paramount’s biggest hits in the last few years.
The Invisible Man opened in second place with $20.1 million in 47 markets. This includes a first place opening in the U.K. with $2.77 million in 581 theaters. On the other hand, the film had to settle for fourth place in France with $2.27 million in 363.
The Call of the Wild slipped to third place with $11.0 million in 50 markets for totals of $33.4 million internationally and $79.3 million worldwide. This includes an $800,000 opening in Japan. This isn’t good, but it isn’t bad considering the coronavirus’s effects on that market.
The Gentlemen entered the top five for the first time during its run with $8.47 million in 64 markets for totals of $66.7 million internationally and $101.8 million worldwide. The film has been a massive hit in Russia earning $15.63 million after three weeks of release. This includes $2.85 million on 975 screens this past weekend, which was enough to lift the film to first place in that market. It also became the highest-grossing non-sequel, independent import in that market. On the one hand, that is a record. On the other hand, there’s a lot of caveats there, so it is not a super impressive record.
Dolittle rounded out the top five with $6.3 million in 61 markets for totals of $141.4 million internationally and $217.4 million worldwide. It would be really nice if the film could get to $250 million worldwide and it hasn’t opened in Japan yet, so I guess that’s possible. I wouldn’t bet on it, on the other hand.
