International Box Office: Sonic Runs Another Lap in First Place
February 27, 2020
Sonic The Hedgehog remained in first place on the international chart this past weekend earning $38.3 million in 56 markets for totals of $96.5 million internationally and $203.0 million worldwide. It’s only major market opening of the weekend came in Russia where the film earned fourth place with $3.84 million on 2,042 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.62 million. I think Paramount would have been relatively happy had the film finished with just over $200 million worldwide, so this is a fantastic run so far.
The Call of the Wild opened in second place with $15.4 million in 40 markets. This includes several major markets, but it wasn’t a real hit in any of them. Its biggest opening was in France, but it only managed third place with $2.6 million there. It did earn top spot in Indonesia, but with just $700,000, so it is a case of weak competition rather than a powerful opening.
Dolittle returned to the top five in third place with $11.7 million in 66 markets for totals of $130.3 million internationally and $204.8 million worldwide. It returned to the top five thanks mostly to its second place, $4.23 million opening on 1,782 screens in Russia.
1917 remained in fourth place, again, this time with $9.9 million in 50 markets for totals of $195.7 million internationally and $347.5 million worldwide. The film opened in second place in South Korea with $1.35 million on 884 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.17 million.
Birds of Prey rounded out the top five with $9.3 million on 10,132 screens in 78 markets for totals of $101.1 million internationally and $173.5 million worldwide.
