Home Market Releases for September 17th, 2019
September 18, 2019
It’s one of those weeks on the home market. There are almost no new releases to talk about and the ones worth talking about all have caveats when it comes to my recommendations. That is to say, while there are a number of DVDs / Blu-ray that I recommend buying, there are none that really rise to the level of Pick of the Week. This leaves Spider-Man: Far from Home as the Pick of the Week, despite it coming out only on VOD so far.

This is a great show, but I’m burned out of the genre, so I stopped watching a few seasons back. I did put in a request for both DVDs of the final season to see if the show ended on a high note and the Complete Series Megaset to see if there’s any reason to double-dip. However, they are late. If they don’t arrive soon, then they will be relegated to the Holiday Gift Guide.
One of two period pieces about stage magicians to come out at about the same time. This one earned weaker reviews and isn’t as well-remembered, but I really liked it. I put in a request for a screener, but it is late. There are not a lot of extras (audio commentary track and two short featurettes), but that is still enough for it to be worth picking up.
Video on Demand
This show is off its peak, as it is no longer award-worthy, but it is still fun to watch. In fact, it was the only network sitcom that I watched the entire season. Likewise, the DVD release isn’t a Pick of the Week contender like the previous seasons, but it is still worth picking up.
This film was not a big hit when it first came out, but it did earn outstanding reviews. The Blu-ray has just an audio commentary track; however, this is better than a lot of similar releases would get. It’s worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender. ... I’m already sick of that phrase and this isn’t the last time it is appropriate.
I’m not a fan of Popeye, but I do appreciate the chronological releases. It helps fans get the shorts they want the easiest way.
Video on Demand
This is the closest we have to a Pick of the Week contender on DVD or Blu-ray. The reviews are excellent, it is only coming out on DVD, but the DVD does have some deleted scenes, which isn’t bad for a documentary.
Video on Demand
An British movie about single mother who wants to become a country star. The reviews are fantastic and the extras are good for a limited release with an interview with the star, Jessie Buckley, and some deleted scenes. This is certainly enough to be worth picking up, but not enough to be a Pick of the Week contender.
Video on Demand
Just skip it. The Dark Phoenix Saga is an amazing story in the comics, because it had decades of character development backing it up. You can’t rush it to make a movie and this is the second time the filmmakers have tried and failed.
No Christmas releases this week, but there are some next week.
