Weekend Wrap-Up: Almost Nothing Worked on Labor Day Long Weekend
September 4, 2019
There were no new wide releases this past weekend and unfortunately, the holdovers weren’t able to take advantage. Angel Has Fallen remained on top, but it did so with only $11.80 million over the three-day weekend. This wasn’t enough to match expectations or last year’s number one film, Crazy Rich Asians. The overall box office fell 18% from last weekend, falling to $89 million. Worse still, this is 10% lower than this weekend last year, putting 2019 behind 2018 by a 6.2% or $510 million at $7.64 billion to $8.15 billion. On the positive note, this is likely the low point of the year and the Fall looks a lot stronger, starting with It: Chapter Two this coming weekend.
Angel Has Fallen was down 45% during the three-day weekend with $11.80 million and $15.38 million including Monday pushing its running tally to $44.49 million after eleven days of release. The film is doing even better internationally and it is clear there will be another installment in the franchise.
Good Boys earned $9.51 million / $12.19 million over the weekend for a total of $59.20 million. This is already enough to be considered a financial success and I suspect it will be a hit on the home market as well.
The Lion King earned $6.92 million / $9.35 million over the weekend for a seven-week total of $523.58 million. The film is one of the highest grossing movies of all time and there’s not much more to be said about that.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw managed fourth place with $6.46 million / $8.40 million over the weekend for a total of $159.22 million after a month of release. The film cost $200 million to make, so its international numbers are saving its box office run.
There was a very close race for fifth place with Ready or Not earning fifth place over the three-day weekend with $5.91 million, but it had to settle for sixth over four days with $7.47 million. The film now has $21.95 million after just 13 days of release, while it is on pace to match its $30 million combined budget domestically.
Overcomer was pushed into sixth place over the three-day weekend with $5.67 million, but it did really well on Monday earning an four-day total of $7.78 million. The film has pulled in $19.32 million so far, which is great for a faith-based film.
