Friday Estimates: Holdovers Also Go on Holiday
August 31, 2019
There were no new wide releases on Friday, and sadly the holdovers didn’t thrive as a result. It’s going to be a brutal weekend at the box office. Angel Has Fallen topped the chart on Friday, but wasn’t able to match expectations with $2.9 million. That said, it is still on pace for $15 million over the full four-day weekend for a two-week total of $44 million, which is a good result for this time of year.
I thought Good Boys would grow a little bit from last weekend, at least over the four-day weekend. That doesn’t appear to be the case, but it should come really, really close. It earned $2.33 million on Friday and Universal is projecting a four-day weekend haul of $11.45 million as a result.
Ready or Not managed a spot in the top five with $1.53 million on Friday; however, as a horror film, it will have shorter legs over the rest of the weekend likely leaving it in sixth place with $7 million over the weekend.
The Lion King was right behind with $1.50 million on Friday, putting it on pace for between $8 million and $9 million over the four-day weekend. This is weaker than anticipated, but that’s true of every film on this list. Also, it is already one of the biggest hits of all time, so missing expectations on Labor Day isn’t an issue.
Overcomer made $1.41 million and Sony is projecting $7.9 million over the four-day weekend.
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw earned $1.4 million and Universal is projecting a four-day weekend of $7.73 million. Interestingly, one of the other studios is projecting $8.25 million for Hobbs and Shaw, which would give it fourth place instead. We will see on Tuesday which studio was correct.
