International Box Office: Lion King Remains Top Dog
July 31, 2019
The Lion King remained in first place on the international chart earning $142.8 million in 53 markets for totals of $611.9 million internationally and $962.7 million worldwide. The film’s only opening this weekend was in Hong Kong, where it earned $2.0 million opening in first place. The film has yet to open in Italy and Japan, so it will have no trouble getting to $1 billion before it finishes its international run.
Nezha expanded wide growing to first place in China with $95.25 million over the weekend for a total of $104.30 million including a week of limited release. It is very rare for an animated film to do this well in China and even rarer for a Chinese animated film to be made.
Spider-Man: Far from Home remained in third place with $21.98 million on 13,775 screens in 86 markets for totals of 693.36 million internationally and $1.038 billion worldwide. It became the first film not released by Disney to earn $1 billion this year, while it was also the third film in the M.C.U. to get to that milestone this year alone. The MCU holds the top three spots on the worldwide chart and it is about two weeks away from reaching $5 billion for the year.
Toy Story 4 was next with $19.4 million in 40 markets for totals of $522.3 million internationally and $918.5 million worldwide. The film’s trailing legs are longer than expected, meaning it has a better than 50/50 chance of getting to $1 billion worldwide, especially with an opening in Germany still to come.
Looking Up added $18.09 million over the weekend to its running tally, which now sits at $107.34 million in its native China.
Aladdin reached $1 billion very early in the weekend with $7.2 million in 33 markets for totals of $663.8 million internationally and $1.010 billion worldwide.
