Weekend Estimates: Toy Story has a June-Like Hold with $58 million

Toy Story 4 is earning first place over the weekend with $57.92 million. A few weeks ago, a 52% sophomore stint drop-off by a family film would have been a really bad sign; however, June was so bad that this result matches expectations, more or less. The film now has $236.92 million domestically and should race past $300 million here before it is done. This is a monster hit and more than enough to be profitable, but still disappointing. This film is having a better weekend internationally, earning $80.6 million in 45 markets for totals of $259.6 million internationally and $496.5 million worldwide. This includes a $7.0 million opening in France, which is the best in the franchise.
Annabelle Comes Home is having the weakest opening for its franchise with $20.37 million over the three-day weekend for a five-day debut of $31.20 million. This is a better opening than I thought would happened after Wednesday, but still the weakest in the franchise. It don’t expect its legs to be able to make up the difference, as its reviews and its B minus from CinemaScore are merely good, but not great. The film is doing better internationally with an opening of $45 million on 15,520 screens in 63 markets. This includes particularly impressive debuts in Mexico ($6.9 million) and Indonesia ($5.0 million).
Yesterday is a bit of a pleasant surprise, earning an estimated $17.0 million domestically. Additionally, while its reviews are nothing special, it managed an A minus from CinemaScore, which is a good sign going forward. It got off to a slow start internationally with just $7.7 million in 30 markets. This includes a second place opening in both the U.K. ($2.80 million) and in Australia ($2.52 million).
Aladdin continues its stellar run with $9.34 million over the weekend for a total of $305.86 million. The fact that it is still in the top five after six weeks says a lot. Internationally, the film is doing even better with $24.4 million over the weekend for totals of $568.3 million internationally and $874.2 million worldwide. It will reach $900 million by this time next weekend and $1 billion is not impossible. It’s not likely, but not impossible.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 is earning $7.09 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $131.20 million. Internationally, the film is earning $11.8 million in 52 markets for a total of $91.8 million, while its worldwide total rose to $223.0 million. It managed first place in Germany with $2.19 million.
Avengers: Endgame was re-released, and will earn seventh place with $5.54 million for a total of $841.32 million after ten weeks of release. Internationally, it didn’t get a real push, and will earn an estimated $2.3 million in 40 markets for totals of $1.920 billion and a worldwide total of $2.761 billion. The film is now just $15 million behind Avatar for top spot on the all-time worldwide chart. It should get there, especially if it gets a boost from Spider-Man: Far From Home’s debut next weekend.
Speaking of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the film started its international run with $111.2 million on 33,900 screens in three markets. These markets were led by China, where it earned $98 million, making it the seventh-biggest opening for a western film in that market. It was also very strong in Japan with $9.4 million and in Hong Kong with $3.8 million. The film expands into most of the rest of the world next weekend, but Italy will have to wait till the 10th for this film.
