Home Market Releases for December 25th, 2018
December 24, 2018
This year, Christmas Day lands on a Tuesday. Tuesday is the usual day for new DVD / Blu-ray releases. You can see why releasing a DVD / Blu-ray on Christmas Day is a bad idea, so it should come as no surprise that there are almost no releases worth talking about. The only “big” release of the week is White Boy Rick and on an average week, that would be relegated to the Secondary Blu-ray list. The biggest release on this week’s list is The Predator, but that’s because the screener arrived a week late.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
A documentary about folk singer Shirley Collins as she records her first album in 40 years. Normally I try to only include new releases in the top 1,000 sales rank on this list. This isn’t in the top 100,000, but it at least has good reviews, so it is worth talking about.
Video on Demand
Cuba Gooding, Jr.’s directorial debut. That’s literally the only reason it’s on this list. It has a good cast, but it is not a good movie and should be avoided.
A Canadian movie starring Mouna Traoré. The film is set in 2049 and Mouna Traoré stars as a reluctant princess who has to save her people by resurrecting Caribbean spirits with a ritual that killed her mother. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes; in fact there is no page on Rotten Tomatoes. It did win a couple of awards at Film Festivals.
Video on Demand
A documentary about cam girls and this sector of the adult entertainment industry. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s one of the better sellers on this week’s list.
A dark comedy about a con artist and a prostitute who desperately need $98 to get bus tickets out of town. Dark comedies tend to struggle with critics, but this one is earning good reviews.
Video on Demand
The screener arrived late, but I got to the review this weekend. Was it worth the wait? Or would I have been happier had it not shown up at all. Read our review to find out.
A PBS documentary about how various people celebrate religion and spirituality around the world. It is the best-reviewed release on this week’s list, but there appear to be no extras, so it is not quite a Pick of the Week contender.
According to Amazon, this is the best-selling new release of the week. Rhett and Link are very popular YouTubers, but being number one is still surprising.
Video on Demand
I forgot this was a wide release. The extras are better than expected, but the film itself is just forgettale.
American Renegades - Reviews - Video on Demand
Goosebumps 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Goosebumps 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
The Oath - Reviews - Video on Demand
Goosebumps 2 is the biggest release on this week’s list, but it is only coming out on VOD. That said, it and The Oath are solid rentals.
