International Box Office: The Rise and Fall(out) of Mission: Impossible
August 8, 2018
Mission: Impossible—Fallout returned to first place on the international chart with $76 million in 56 markets for totals of $205 million internationally and $330 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in both Japan and France, earning $8 million in each market. By this time next week, the film will no longer be in last place for the franchise, but it is still too soon to tell if it will become the biggest hit out of the six films.
Hello Mr. Billionaire slipped to second place with $66.10 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $295.23 million.
Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days was next with $30 million over the weekend for a total opening of $46 million. Nearly all of this was earned in its native South Korea, where the film debuted with $29.90 million on 2,235 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $46.24 million. Its next biggest market was Australia, where it earned $155,000 on just 35 screens.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again rose to fourth place with $19.3 million in 53 markets for totals of $139.2 million internationally and $230.4 million worldwide. This biggest new market this past weekend was Brazil, where it earned $1.20 million in 448 theaters for third place. The best market overall was the U.K., where the film remained in first place with $5.64 million in 707 theaters for a three-week total of $51.66 million. That’s huge compared to its results here, given the relative size of the two markets. We’re talking between $250 million and $300 million.
Incredibles 2 rounded out the top five with $19.0 million in 42 markets for totals of $463.9 million internationally and $1.047 billion worldwide. The film overtook Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides for 27th place on the all-time chart.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom fell out of the top ten with just $5.9 million in 63 markets over the weekend for totals of $854.5 million internationally and $1.260 billion worldwide. It is about to overtake Beauty and the Beast for 13th place on the all-time chart and it might not be done climbing that list.
