Friday Estimates: Ocean’s 8 Opens With $15 million, Fallen Kingdom Will Steal its Thunder
June 9, 2018
Two of the three new releases opened well on Friday. Ocean’s 8 open with $15.8 million, putting it on pace for an opening weekend of $42 million. This is the best opening in the franchise. It is also the cheapest installment in the franchise with a $70 million production budget, so it won’t need amazing legs to break even during its initial push into the home market. Its reviews are 69% positive, while it earned a B plus from CinemaScore. Neither of those results are particularly good, but they are no reason to panic either. Unfortunately, it won’t have the same legs as its predecessors, as the market has changed in the past decade. Furthermore, films with predominately female casts don’t do as well internationally, so the film will rely a little more on its domestic numbers to break even. That said, Warner Bros. should be happy with this result.
As impressive as this result is, it isn’t the biggest box office result of the weekend. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom started its international run this weekend and has already pulled in over $40 million in just two days, putting it on pace for $145.9 million in 48 markets. This includes $9.7 million opening day in South Korea, which is a new record in that market. The previous record was held by The Mummy.
Hereditary opened in second place with $5.18 million on Friday. It is also earning 94% positive reviews, but it only managed a D plus from CinemaScore. It is yet another Art House Horror film to win over critics, but alienate audiences. Fortunately, with a start like this, it should still earn $13 million over the weekend and, even if it has tragically short legs, it will be a financial success sometime on the home market.
Solo: A Star Wars Story was pushed into third place with $4.04 million on Friday, but it won’t stay there long and should finish the weekend in second place with $14 million.
Hotel Artemis bombed with just $1.11 million on Friday, putting it on pace for about $3 million over the weekend. The film had the weakest reviews of the three wide releases and only managed a C minus from CinemaScore. Additionally, theater owners will be looking to drop this film as soon as they are contractually able to, so its legs will be even worse.
Won’t You Be My Neighbor? was the biggest limited release earning, $146,000 in 29 theaters on Friday alone. Hearts Beat Loud is also expected to do well with $80,000 in four theaters over the weekend.
