Weekend Estimates: Rampage Squeaks Out a Win
April 15, 2018
Rampage isn’t exactly living up to its name this weekend, as it heads for a $34.5 million debut—just enough to keep A Quiet Place in second place, with $32.6 million in its second outing (down a very respectable 35% from its debut). As might be expected, international markets are proving friendlier to Rampage than the US and Canada, and it’s off to a healthy $114.1 million start in 61 territories, according to Warner Bros.’ Sunday morning estimate.
China is the biggest market for Rampage, with $55 million from 21,500 screens, ahead of Tomb Raider’s debut in that market by 32%. The UK is chipping in with another $5.7 million, exactly the same earnings as South Korea. Other major markets include Mexico, $4.8 million; Malaysia, $3.5m; Indonesia, $3.1m; Russia, $3.1m; and India, Australia, and Thailand with $2.3m each. The film had the best opening day of the year, and second-best ever day for WB in UAE on its way to $2.2 million for the weekend in that country.
Back home, Truth or Dare will open with a shade over $19 million, which is an impressive performance given that it had to go up against A Quiet Place. The expansion of Isle of Dogs is looking more disappointing, with $5 million from 1,939 theaters and an average of just over $2,500. Beirut is headed for $1.65 million from 755 locations.
In limited release, Kino Lorber has two reasons to celebrate this weekend. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is set to debut with $60,442 from just three New York theaters, and Hitler’s Hollywood will bring in about $10,177 from a single theater. Those two are the only films reporting so far to top $10,000 per theater this weekend.
