Home Market Releases for March 6th, 2018
March 6, 2018
Thor: Ragnarok is by far the biggest Blu-ray release of the week and one of the best blockbusters of 2017. However, it was already named Pick of the Week last week, so we will have to pick a different film this week. There are a few contenders: The Breadwinner, Faces Places, and Lady Bird. All three of them are Oscars nominated films, none of them won. It was a close call, but in the end, Lady Bird won.

And yes, the review is more than a month late, but the screener arrived a month late, so I got it done as soon as I could.

A live action kids movie based on a popular book series that is going Direct-to-DVD. It is selling better than expected, so that’s a good sign. However, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes to judge it by. Perhaps rent it on VOD first.
Video on Demand
A B-movie classic, one that is sure to please fans of the genre. Is it worth picking up for fans of these movies? Or is a VOD rental all the movie is worth? Read our review to find out.

This film earned an Oscar Nomination for Best Feature-Length Animated Film, but it lost out to Coco. Extras include intro, audio commentary track, and a making of featurette. That’s not a lot, but it is better than most limited releases have and it is more than enough to be a Pick of the Week Contender.

This is a Hallmark Channel Original. You know the drill. There are no reviews, but the target audience knows if they want to watch this film or not.
Dario Argento’s second film didn’t suffer from a sophomore slump. Extras include a new audio commentary track and new interviews, as well as physical extras. I’m not sure this is enough if you already own the movie on Blu-ray, but if not, then this is the perfect opportunity.
I knew I wouldn’t have enough time to review a full season this week, not on Oscar weekend of all weekends, so I passed on this screener. It arrived anyway. I’ll try to get a review done this week, but I already have a screener for next weekend and another two or three that might show up late, so I can’t promise anything.
Speaking of late screeners, I’m hoping to get a Blu-ray screener for this to review. I love this movie more than the average critic, but I will admit it has been at least a decade since I’ve seen it.

I thought for sure this film would win the Oscar for best documentary. If it had, then this DVD / Blu-ray would have sold a lot better this week. The extras are better than most documentaries get and it is clearly a Pick of the Week contender.

One of the few Anime titles that makes this list on a regular basis. This movie earned good reviews on My Anime List, but not as good as the TV series has earned. Extras on the TV show include a couple of audio commentary tracks, while the movie is not as lucky.
Video on Demand
This film earned five Oscar nominations, but went home empty-handed on Oscar night. That said, even if there were no extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, it would still be a Pick of the Week contender. It does have some extras: an audio commentary track and behind-the-scenes. That’s not a lot, but it is good enough for a limited release.

A Christmas film / biography about Charles Dickens. The film isn’t great, some were expecting Oscar-worthy, but it is a solidly entertaining film. The only extra is a making of featurette, so call it a solid rental, leaning toward a purchase.
An old school Anime that has been around in one form or another since the late 1970s. Like most Anime releases, there are not a lot of extras on the four-disc set. Then again, the price-per-minute is better than most imports.

The screener arrived a little late, but I was able to get the review done over the weekend. Was it worth the wait? Am I excited for the planned sequel? Check out our review to find out.

I don’t watch football, but I hear it was a good game. Also, it is the first Super Bowl win for the Eagles, that that should be nice for the fans. I’m a Canucks fan, so I don’t know what that feeling is like.
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (Plus Bonus Content)
I reviewed this film last weekend, but it doesn’t come out until this weekend.
Video on Demand
Possibly the second last film by Woody Allen. It is not a good movie and most can safely skip this one.
