Theater Averages: Post Haunts the Theater Average Chart

None of the new releases reached the $10,000 club, which is not unexpected. The Post remained in first place earning an average of $47,167 in 36 theaters. This is an amazing omen for its upcoming wide expansion. Phantom Thread slipped to $40,040 in four theaters. There was a large gap to the third place film, Ex Files 3: Return of the Exes, which earned an average of $10,418 in 17 theaters, while I, Tonya was right behind with $10,107 in 242 theaters. The best new release of the week was actually the only wide release of the week, Insidious: The Last Key, with an average of $9,493.

The only new limited release that was even close to the $10,000 club was In Between, which earned an average of $5,976 in two theaters over the weekend and an average of $8,781 from Wednesday through Sunday. Goldbuster was next with an average of $3,299 in 24 theaters. That’s not a good start. In the Land of Pomegranates and Django were neck-and-neck with averages of $3,072 in one theater and $2,931 in four respectively. Namiya missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,885 in 21 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Along With The Gods The Two Worlds reached $1 million over the weekend and it still has room to grow. It is doing amazingly well for a foreign-language film.
  • The Post hit $2 million before the weekend and $3 million during the weekend. It will get to $4 million before its expansion on Friday.
  • Tiger Zinda Hai made it to $5 million before the weekend and has a shot at $6 million before its run is over. However, it is losing theaters, so that’s not a sure thing.
  • I, Tonya expanded into over 200 theaters this past weekend and that helped it reach $5 million. More impressively, its theater average is still over the $10,000 mark.
  • Call Me by Your Name hit $5 million before the weekend and $6 million over the weekend. It looks like it has peaked at the box office, on the other hand.
  • Molly’s Game expanded semi-wide getting to $10 million in the process. It will get to $15 million before the weekend and $20 million over the weekend.
  • The Shape of Water peaked at the box office, but it still hit $20 million over the weekend. It has entered the top 100 on the 2017 domestic chart and will continue to climb, especially if it wins more awards.
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri got to $25 million over the weekend, but unless it keeps winning awards, it won’t get any further.
  • Darkest Hour nearly doubled its theater count and that helped it get past $25 million over the weekend. It was in 80th place on the 2017 domestic chart by the end of the weekend.
