Friday Estimates: Coco Clings to the Top, Disaster Artist Achieves a Spot in the Top Five

December 9, 2017

Coco

Coco surprised no one by earning first place on Friday. It earned $4.27 million, giving it a running tally of $121.48 million after 17 days of release and putting it on pace for $19 million over the weekend. Good news: This is a little better than expected. Bad news: Next weekend could be a mess, as the film will not only have to deal with monster competition, but direct competition as well. If it can avoid being demolished at the box office next weekend, then it will stick around in the top ten for the rest of the year. Even if if does get demolished, it still has a shot at $200 million domestically, but it will be close.

Justice League earned second place on Friday with $2.55 million; however, that’s nearly identical to the $2.51 million Wonder earned. That said, the former film had a better gain last Saturday. Both films will likely match or improve our predictions, albeit by a tiny margin.

The Disaster Artist grabbed fourth place with $2.4 million, putting it on pace for between $6 million and $7 million. It will have the weakest legs in the top five, because this is the first week it has expanded nationwide, but this should still be enough to earn fourth place, just ahead of Thor: Ragnarok.

Just Getting Started was widely expected to bomb, and it did, earning just $1.1 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $3 million over the weekend. The reviews are not only bad, they are aggressively bad with a lot of 1-star reviews. Worse still, its CinemaScore is a mere C, which is well below what is needed to have even average legs. Missing the Mendoza Line will result in a lot of theaters dropping the film as soon as they are contractually able to, so the holidays likely won’t be enough to salvage this film’s box office.
