International Box Office: Thor Hits Century Mark with $107.6 million
November 2, 2017
Thor: Ragnarok got its international start off with a bang dominating the market with $107.6 million in 36 markets during its opening weekend of release. The film’s biggest opening came in the U.K. where it dominated the market with $16.22 million in 611 theaters, which is 27% higher than Doctor Strange opened with in that market. This film also dominated South Korea earning $12.00 million on 1,639 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $15.87 million. This total is 12% lower than Doctor Strange, but that was an aberration, because overall, Thor: Ragnarok’s debut was 22% ahead of Doctor Strange’s debuts in the same market. If Thor can have similar legs, it will finish with more than $500 million internationally and possibly even $800 million worldwide.
Geostorm raced into second place with $49.3 million in 61 markets for totals of $113.4 million internationally and $137.2 million worldwide. Most of the film’s weekend haul came from China, where it earned $33.68 million over the weekend for a total opening of $34.06 million. Sadly, studios only get 25% of the Chinese box office, unless the film is a Chinese co-production, so this won’t help it break even. It will help it save face, which is as good as it gets.
Fack ju Göthe 3 debuted in Germany with $17.84 million. It is rare for a Germany film to reach the top five, but the previous films in the franchise earned over $200 million combined, so it isn’t a shock that this film is doing well financially.
Blade Runner 2049 remained in fourth place with $16.6 million in 63 markets for totals of $142.0 million internationally and $223.5 million worldwide. The film opened in third place in China with $7.58 million over the weekend for a total opening of $7.64 million. In Japan, it only managed $1.99 million on 431 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.69 million. The film really needed to earn a lot more in both of those markets to have any shot at breaking even any time soon.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle fell from first to fifth with $13.4 million in 44 markets for totals of $280.6 million internationally and $377.9 million worldwide. The film fell 76% in its second weekend in China earning $9.24 million for a running tally of $63.28 million. The film hasn’t quite broken even, but it is close enough that it will get there during its initial push into the home market.
