Friday Estimates: Boo 2 Scares Up $7.47 Million, Other New Releases are just Scared
October 21, 2017
As expected, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween led the way on Friday with $7.37 million. Granted, its reviews are terrible, as its Tomatometer Score has fallen into the single-digit range. On the other hand, it earned a A minus from CinemaScore, which is the same score its predecessor earned. If this film has the same legs as the original did, then it will earn $22.4 million during the opening weekend. However, it is a sequel, so it will likely miss that mark with about $22 million. That’s approximately 10% below our prediction, so I’m happy with that result. It is also likely more than the film cost to make, so Lionsgate should also be happy.
Geostorm opened in second place with $4.3 million and will struggle the rest of the weekend and beyond. Its early reviews were 38% positive, but since then its Tomatometer Score fell to just 13% positive. That’s more in line with my expectations. Its CinemaScore is better, only because it would be medically impossible to be worse than its Tomatometer Score. That said, it only managed a B minus and that will likely result in short legs. Look for an opening weekend of just over $11 million, which is nearly identical to our prediction, but a complete disaster for a movie that cost $100 million to make.
Happy Death Day fell 74% from its opening Friday with just $3.0 million. It will bounce back on Saturday and Sunday, but even so, it will fail to reach $10 million during its second weekend of release. However, the film already earned more than it cost to make and advertise, and with this result, it remains on pace to break even just on its domestic box office numbers.
The rest of the new releases all bombed, so we will go over them quickly. Only the Brave earned just $2.13 million on Friday, but with the best reviews and a solid A from CinemaScore, it should have good legs, which gives it a shot a $6 million over the weekend.
Same Kind of Different as Me opened in seventh place with $1.36 million over the weekend. It still only has five reviews, only one of which is positive, while it was too small for CinemaScore to track. On the other hand, it is a faith-based film, so it should do well on Sunday, meaning it will likely top our prediction with just over $4 million during its opening weekend.
The Snowman was right behind with $1.3 million, but its Tomatometer Score is just 9% positive and it earned a D from CinemaScore, so its legs will be much shorter. It will earn just over $3 million over the full weekend.
