John Wick: Chapter Two

It’s a good week, but a shallow weak. The biggest release of the week is The Lego Batman Movie, which is also one of the best. There are a couple of other big releases that are must haves, like Dark Matter: Season Two, but the size and quality quickly drop-off after that. As for the Pick of the Week, the John Wick: Chapter Two Blu-ray Combo Pack claims that title.

Alone in Berlin - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This film earned mixed reviews and went nowhere in limited release. It would normally be filler in even an average week, but there’s not a lot of new releases to talk about this week.

Baa Baa Black Sheep: Season One - Our Review - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is one of the first reviews I wrote, which means I’ve been doing reviews for 12 years. This is a really fun show and $15 for the full season is a bargain. Worth picking up.

Bitter Harvest - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This film is only noteworthy for how bad it is. Its Tomatometer Score is just 10% positive and it opened below the Mendoza Line in limited release. On the other hand, it is selling well compared to most other new releases, but that just shows it is a slow week on the home market.

Bones: The Final Chapter - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
12 years is a long time for a TV show to be on the air, but Bones finally wrapped it up this past season and fans can complete their DVD collection this week. Also coming out this week is the Complete Collection Megaset. It’s less than $10 a season, which is a good deal.

Chivalry of a Failed Knight - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
In a world with Mage-Knights, one of the lowest ranking knights is forced into a duel with one of the best and the loser has to become the winner’s slave. Next month, a Collector’s Edition is coming out, so hardcore fans might want to wait.

Dark Matter: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of only a handful of shows that I watch every week on TV, although in this case, “every week” is just 13 episodes a season. Strangely, while the second season comes out on DVD and Blu-ray this Tuesday, the third season began on TV last Friday. I don’t know why this is the case and I don’t want it explained to me, because I fear the reason is so stupid my brain would reject it and cause season injury. Extras include a backstage featurette for each episode and some outtakes. It is worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The fourth film in the Dragonheart franchise. Normally this would only be mentioned in the Secondary Blu-ray releases section, but it is a slow week. Also coming out this week is the four-film box set, but it is only coming out on DVD.

Grimm: Season Six - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show earned mixed reviews during its first season and never really found a large audience. That said, sticking around for six seasons is still impressive. Also coming out this week is the Complete Series Megaset.

Growing up Smith - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A movie about a young boy who migrated from India to the United States with his family and his attempts at fitting in. The reviews are good, but not great, while it is only getting a DVD release.

John Wick: Chapter Two - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The sequel to John Wick. The original film opened with no major hype, so it caught a lot of people off guard. This film obviously had a lot more buzz, but can it live up to its predecessor? Read our review to find out.

The Lego Batman Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film earned great reviews, but didn’t quite live up to admittedly high box office predictions. That said, it made enough money worldwide to likely cover its combined production and advertising budgets, which is enough to justify a sequel or two. It also shows that fun super hero movies are in demand. Extras include an audio commentary track, making of featurettes, bonus shorts, and more. It is definitely worth picking up and a clear contender for Pick of the Week.

Outlaw Star: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
An Anime series that first aired in Japan nearly 20 years ago. It is a Sci-fi treasure hunting series that is earning great user reviews on My Anime List, but I know nothing about it. It is selling well, compared to most other new releases this week, so clearly there is a market for it here.

The Rockford Files: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Great show, but wait for the Blu-ray, which comes out at the end of the month.

RWBY: Volume 4 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The screener arrived last Monday, which is technically not late, but not early enough to get the review done on time. Was it worth the wait? Or is the show starting to run out of steam? Check out our review for our opinion.

South Park: The Complete Twentieth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
20 seasons. They haven’t made a classic episode since Make Love, Not Warcraft from the tenth season, but lasting 20 seasons is still a reason to celebrate.

Spider-Man - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Sam Raimi Trilogy and Amazing Spider-man Double-Shot
I only own the Sam Raimi trilogy on DVD. I should fix that problem. I don’t own either of the Amazing films. I’m going to continue to have that gap in my collection. On a side note, I think Spider-Man 3 is underrated. I love the scene where Peter Parker tries to act cool. A lot of people hate that scene and think it is cringe-inducing, but that’s the point. In the scene, a high school nerd and an alien symbiote are trying to act cool, but neither of them have a clue what cool is, so of course the result is going to make you cringe.

Table 19 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
So much comedic talent, but the end result is so bad.

Three Generations - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Yet another Weinstein Co. film that missed expectations in theaters. Then again, it made it to theaters, which is better than Amityville: The Awakening, which was pulled from the schedule, again.

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Eighth and Final Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I was never a fan of this show, but it had to have an audience, or it wouldn’t have lasted 8 seasons. Also coming out this week is the Complete Series Megaset.

The Wild Wild: Double Feature - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This DVD is fighting for a spot in the top five best-selling new releases for the week. On an average week, I wouldn’t even mention it.

The Worst Movie EVER! - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This movie has the worse opening weekend of all time at just $11. This happened, because the filmmakers forgot what its release date was and didn’t promote the movie. When they did promote the movie, it earned $25,000 in limited release. That’s probably more than it cost to make.

Power: Season 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
They Live By Night: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Three Sisters - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
It’s a bad week for secondary Blu-ray releases, as most of them are earning bad reviews. They Live By Night The Criterion Collection is the biggest exception, as its reviews are unanimously positive.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
The Lego Batman Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
There’s only one 3D release this week, but it is one of the biggest releases of the week and it is worth picking up.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
John Wick: Chapter Two - Our Review - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The new Planet of the Apes movie comes out next month, so it is smart timing to release the first two on 4K Ultra HD now.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Bones - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Borgias - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Grimm - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Transformers: The Japanese Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Vampire Diaries - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray.
I reviewed the first part of the Transformers: The Japanese Collection when it came out earlier. I might buy this box set to check out the other two series.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
CHiPs - Reviews - Video on Demand
Forsaken - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Frantz - Reviews - Video on Demand
Misdirection: The Real Magic - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Once Upon a Time in Venice - Reviews - Video on Demand
T2: Trainspotting - Reviews - Video on Demand
T2: Trainspotting didn’t live up to expectations with critics, so maybe wait till you can rent it. Or maybe the Blu-ray will be amazing. I’m hoping to get a screener.
