Friday Estimates: Get Out Gets off to a Fast Start with $10.8 million
February 25, 2017
As expected, Get Out earned first place on the Friday box office chart with $10.8 million. This a little higher than originally predicted, but not quite up to the heights that seemed possible after Thursday’s $1.8 million in previews. The film’s Tomatometer Score remains 100% positive, although I did see that Armond White gave the film a negative review. I didn’t realize he still wrote reviews. His reputation is so bad that a negative review from him is something to cherish. Furthermore, it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, which is stunning for a horror film. Even a B plus is great for a horror film. Look for $28 million over the weekend and an easy first place finish.
The Lego Batman Movie was well back in second place with $4.275 million on Friday. However, as a family film, it will bounce back on Saturday and still earn between $17 million and $18 million over the weekend for a total of around $130 million. At this pace, $200 million domestically is slipping away, but the film will still make enough to turn a profit by its initial push into the home market.
There was practically a three-way tie for third place with Fifty Shades Darker earning $2.6 million, putting it ahead of John Wick: Chapter Two ($2.5 million) and The Great Wall ($2.4 million). John Wick: Chapter Two is matching expectations for the weekend, but the other two are struggling.
Looking further down the list, I mean way down the list, we find Rock Dog earning $901,000 on Friday. As sad as that is, this is actually a little better than expected. The film’s reviews are currently just 46% positive, and it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore. That’s not a good sign. Family films almost always earn in the A range, because of their target audience, so a B plus will likely result in short legs. Look for under $4 million over the weekend and a very quick exit from theaters.
Collide’s opening day was a tragedy, at just $539,072. It also has the worst reviews of the three wide releases and only managed a C plus from CinemaScore. The film will make between $1 million and $2 million over the weekend, giving it a theater average of under $1,000. This makes it one of the worst openings for a truly wide release of all time.
