International Box Office: Yoga Stretches its International Total to $180 million

Kung Fu Yoga bombed in India, but that didn’t stop it from earning first place on the international chart with $51.4 million over the weekend for an international total of $180 million. Nearly all of this came from China, where it earned $50.2 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $179.71 million.
Journey to the West 2 slipped a spot to second with $35.3 million over the weekend for an estimated two-week total of $210 million. This includes $34.12 million in China over the weekend for a total of $205.44 million in its native market. By the end of the weekend, the sequel had surpassed its predecessor, which is great news and one has to assume there will be a third film in the franchise.
Duckweed was third with $30.69 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $92.04 million, all of which has come from China.
La La Land entered the chart in fourth place with $20.1 million in 72 markets for totals of $150.0 million internationally and $268.2 million worldwide. There was no one market that really pushed it into the top five. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K., where it earned $2.26 million in 625 theaters over the weekend for a four-week total of $30.66 million.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter rounded out the top five with $16.03 million on 7,462 screens in 69 markets for totals of $91.68 million internationally and $113.73 million worldwide The film’s best opening of the weekend came in the Philippines, where it earned first place with $1.11 million on 219 screens. Its biggest holdover of the weekend was Indonesia, where it remained in first place with $1.59 million on 412 screens for a two-week total of $4.81 million. The film is bombing domestically, but it has made enough internationally to cover its production budget.
