Limited and VOD Releases: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
December 16, 2016
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story scared away most wide releases and limited releases. That’s not to say there is nothing on this week’s list worth checking out. In fact, Fences was bumped up a week before its wide expansion on Christmas day. That is the only film on this list likely to have any presence at the box office.

Secondary VOD Releases:
A cinema verite documentary about a school for troubled teens. There are only five reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which would usually not be enough to be featured on this list, but if we followed that rule this week, there would be almost nothing to talk about. Also, all five reviews are positive, so while there’s not a lot of buzz, it is still worth checking out.
Denzel Washington returns to the director’s chair for this one. It expands wide on Christmas day, so I will have more to say about it then. I can say it is becoming an Awards Season contender and if it doesn’t pick up at least a few Oscar nominations, I will be surprised.
A drug deal gone wrong results in plenty of dead people and a lot of missing money. This film has a great cast, but middling reviews. If you are a fan of the genre or the actors involved, then it is worth checking out, but I would wait till you can rent it.
A crime thriller about a man who becomes obsessed with a cold case and this sends him into a spiral. Like the above movie, this one has a great cast, but weak reviews. Again, if you want to see it, wait till you can rent it.
This is a re-release of the 1968 movie, which was Anthony Hopkins screen debut. If you are interested in seeing an Anthony Hopkins movie this week, this is the one to watch, especially if you like period films.
A biopic about Pablo Neruda, a celebrated poet who became an enemy to his home country of Chile when he became a communist. It was widely expected to be a major contender for Best Foreign-Language Oscar, but it wasn’t even on the short list.
Video on Demand
Anthony Hopkins plays a psychic who comes out of retirement to help the FBI solve one last case. This film has a great cast, but terrible reviews, so it is not even worth renting on VOD.
A Chinese film set during World War II about organized crime trying to deal with the occupying Japanese army. There are only two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t unusual for a Chinese film, but both reviews are negative.
Chosen - No Reviews - Video on Demand
City of Dead Men - Reviews - Video On Demand
Only two secondary VOD releases this week. One has no reviews and the other has one negative review.
