Limited and VOD Releases: These Films will Put a Spell on You
October 28, 2016
While Halloween doesn’t technically arrive until Monday, it is still sort of Halloween weekend. This explains why there’s not a lot of films on this week’s list. That doesn’t mean there is nothing worth checking out. The Love Witch is the best of this week’s offerings with 100% positive reviews, but it might have to wait till the home market to find an audience.

Secondary VOD Releases:
A documentary about Sidney Lumet featuring an interview that was filmed shortly before the filmmaker’s death. The reviews are mostly good and the film could do well in the art house circuit, but its chances of expanding significantly are close to zero.
This is a documentary about The Stooges, a proto-punk rock band from the 1960s and 1970s. The reviews are excellent and if you are a fan of rockumentaries in general, or of punk in particular, then this film is worth checking out.
This is a horror-thriller homage to the genre films of the 1960s. The film has 100% positive reviews and it is the perfect time to release a film like this. On the other hand, horror films rarely do well in limited release, however, it could find a receptive audience on the home market. I’m certainly interested in seeing it.
A Chinese village needs a donkey to carry water, but they can’t afford a donkey, so they use a charity to buy one.The charity they use, however, is for teachers, so they just pretend that the donkey is their new teacher. It’s a foolproof plan, until the charity shows up wanting to see what their good work has done for the village. There are only two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. They are both positive, but neither critic is really enthusiastic with their recommendation.
A Bollywood romance that stars Aishwarya Rai, who is one of the very few Bollywood stars who has any semblance of star power here.
Video on Demand
One of the better releases of the week. I’m not a fan of the band, but even I know that there were... conflicts between the Gallagher bothers, so that should make for an interesting documentary.
Portrait of a Garden - Reviews - Video on Demand
Recovery - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The Windmill - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are three secondary VOD releases this week... maybe. Two of them are on iTunes and I don’t have iTunes, so I can’t look to see what films are playing on the site. That seems like a really bad design. You should want to entice people to download iTunes by showing them what they are missing.
