Home Market Releases for June 28th, 2016

Usually, this time of year is terrible for the home market. However, this week, Kung Fu Panda 3 hits the home market. I'm still waiting on the screener, but its reviews are a step above most of its competition, so at the very least it is a contender for Pick of the Week. It's not the only contender, but there can only be one winner and this week it's Eye in the Sky on Blu-ray Combo Pack.

On a side note: I might review Batman v Superman. I'm definitely not getting a screener, because Warner Bros. doesn't send out screeners and I can't log into their site. I can't even send tech support an e-mail about the problem. That said, someone I know went to see it in theaters and hated it so much and was so mad no one else that he knew watched the movie, so he couldn't complain about it. He has threatened to buy it on VOD and make us watch it the next time we get together. If that happens, I'll write a review.
I reviewed this film last weekend, because I wanted to get the review online before it first aired on TV. Now that it has aired, is the DVD worth picking up for those who liked it? If you missed it on TV, is it worth checking out? Read our review to find out.
Clouds of Sils Maria: Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I previously reviewed this movie and loved it. However, I was disappointed that it only came out on DVD and there were no extras. This Criterion Collection release fixes both of those problems. I am a little annoyed at the short time from original release to special release, which is why it is not the Pick of the Week. It is a contender, on the other hand.
From the animation studio that brought us The Pink Panther. These are not two of their best-known works.
Dr. Strangelove - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Arguably the best political comedy of all time. This is not the first time the movie has been released on Blu-ray. On the one hand, the film is loaded with extras and it has never looked or sounded better on the home market. On the other hand, there are no new extras for this release. It is still a Pick of the Week Contender, but being a double-dip hurts.

This is one of the best-reviewed films of the year and one of the biggest limited releases at the box office. I put in a request for a screener, but it hasn't arrived yet. Hopefully it will get here soon, because I'm really looking forward to the film. There doesn't appear to be a lot of extras on the DVD or Blu-ray, but it is still a contender for Pick of the Week.

A documentary about baseball narrated by Kevin Costner. The reviews are excellent, but I'm not a fan of the sport, so I can't really say if this is worth it or not.

I have previously reviewed the first two movies in this franchise and I enjoyed both of them. I'm still waiting for the screener for this movie, but given its reviews, I suspect it will be a contender for Pick of the Week.

An movie about a woman who travels from India to New York City to go to college. She has to deal with new surroundings, her studies, and possible romance, as well as Cerebral Palsy. The reviews are outstanding, but it is a really small release, so I fear not many people will notice it.
One of the few Anime franchises that regularly sells well enough to be featured on this list.

It's a shallow week. The fact that I'm actually talking about this film is proof of that. In the film, Zack from Saved by the Bell plays a man who plans a heist that goes wrong, putting him in conflict with Bruce Willis. The film has 0% positive reviews, so no thanks.
I loved this show when it first came out. Unfortunately, it began just before the Reality TV boom and it couldn't compete with cheaply made shows in that genre and was canceled after just four seasons. The 11-disc set costs just under $60, but that is for four seasons, so that's quite a bargain. I'm definitely going to grab it soon. (At the moment, the Steam Summer Sale is going on, so my wallet can't take the beating just yet.)
A British Murder Mystery TV series. Like most, the price-per-minute is really high. In fact, even looking at this as a four-movie set is a little high. The same can be said of DCI Banks: Season Four, which is $25 for three 90-minute TV movies. Also coming out this week is the five-volume collection. It is a better deal, if you don't own any of the previous DVD releases.

Political comedies appear to be poison at the box office and I don't think we will see a studio risk making another one for a while. The film is much better than its box office numbers, while its extras are also a pleasant surprise. It isn't a contender for Pick of the Week, but it is worth picking up.

Out of all of the secondary Blu-ray releases this week, Return of the Killer Tomatoes is the one I want the most. It isn't a good movie, but it is a fun B-movie.
No 4K releases for the second week in a row. There were so many weeks where there was a few 4K releases that we decided to give them a separate category. Now there are none for two weeks in a row. It's embarrassing.
