International Box Office: Dory Earns $50 Million to Dump Warcraft
June 22, 2016
Finding Dory started its international run in first place with $50.0 million in 29 markets. Its biggest market was China, where it earned second place with 18.15 million over the weekend and $18.18 million including previews. This is not a lot of money compared to last week's winner; however, China is not a market that is kind to animated films. Before this year, no animated movie had earned more than $100 million in China and the current record is held by Zootopia at $235.77 million. Zootopia only made $23.99 million during its opening weekend in China, so this isn't a bad start for Finding Dory. Additionally, Finding Dory doubled Zootopia's opening in Australia with $7.63 million on 524 screens. It also performed very well in Argentina ($3.5 million) and in Russia ($3.25 million on 1,220 screens). It is still too early to tell if Finding Dory will top $1 billion worldwide, but this start gives box office watchers a reason to be optimistic.
Warcraft was pushed into second place with $42.0 million in 57 markets for totals of $339.0 million internationally and $372.3 million worldwide. The film's biggest market is China, where it added $24.34 million over the weekend for a 13-day total of $205.37 million. That was still enough for first place in that market, but it was also 63% lower than its opening weekend there. Its biggest new market of the weekend was Mexico, where it managed second place with $2.68 million. It also opened in second place in Australia with $2.50 million on 430 screens. The film won't last much longer in China and might earn more in China than the rest of the world combined. Since studios only get about 25% of the Chinese box office, the film might not break even any time soon.
The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist slipped a spot to third with $41.9 million in 57 markets for totals of $116.2 million internationally and $187.3 million worldwide. The film's biggest new release of the week was in the U.K. where it managed $6.7 million in 780 theaters, which is double what the first film opened with in that market. At this pace, this film will top its predecessor internationally and perhaps worldwide as well.
Now You See Me 2 remained in fourth place with $15.8 million in 54 markets over the weekend for totals of $49.7 million internationally and $90.8 million worldwide. This past weekend, the film debuted in Malaysia with $1.0 million, which is double what the original opened with in that market. It will need a lot more hits like that to break even, on the other hand.
Me Before You entered the international chart in fifth place with $13.5 million over the weekend for a total of $36.0 million so far. The film earned first place in Brazil with $3.1 million, while it had to settle for third place in Australia with $2.11 million on 228 screens. The film should have no trouble getting past $100 million worldwide, which is a great run for a film that cost just $20 million.
X-Men: Apocalypse fell out of the top five, but it did cross the $500 million milestone on the worldwide chart. It earned $12.8 million in 49 markets over the weekend for totals of $364.1 million internationally and $510.3 million worldwide. It doesn't open in Japan until August, so it isn't quite done yet. That said, it hasn't earned enough to break even just yet, but it will get there during its initial run on the home market.
