Thursday Night Previews: Me, Me, Me
June 3, 2016
Oh no. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earned the best Thursday night previews, but did so with just $2 million. That's a mere fraction of the $4.5 million Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and could spell real trouble for the film's box office chances. The reviews are a little better than its predecessor's reviews were, but it is also a sequel and those tend to have shorter legs. It might struggle to top $30 million and that means first place isn't a sure thing anymore.
On a more positive note, Me Before You earned $1.37 million during its previews. By comparisons, The Choice made less than $300,000 on its way to a $6 million opening. You could also use If I Stay, which is another medical romance drama. That film managed $1.1 million during its previews on its way to a $15.68 million opening. Me Before You could earn $20 million over the weekend, which is what it cost to make. Meanwhile, its legs could be long, especially with a audience reaction score of 83% positive, which is the best for the new releases this week. If it can match If I Stay at the box office, then the studio will be very happy with that result. Even just earning $40 million domestically will make breaking even likely.
Finally we get to Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Despite its overwhelmingly positive reviews, the movie only managed $322,000 during previews. ... That's better than The Brothers Grimsby or Meet the Blacks. Yeah, I'm struggling to find a way to stay positive. Missing the Mendoza Line ($2,000 per theater) over the opening weekend became a lot more likely. However, it does have a chance to become a cult classic on the home market.
