Theater Averages: Fang has Teeth with $14,506

The Family Fang led the way on the theater average chart with $14,506 in one theater. This is the last time we will talk about this film's box office numbers, because it opens on VOD this Friday, thus ending its chances of box office success. Then again, clearly VOD is more important to a limited release than the theatrical box office is. The Man Who Knew Infinity was next with an average of $13,388 in six theaters. That's good, but likely not good enough to expand significantly. Eva Hesse was playing in just one theater earning $12,780 over the weekend and $17,912 from Wednesday through Sunday. The Jungle Book made the $10,000 club for the third weekend in a row with an average of $10,818.

None of the rest of the new limited releases did well. Viva was the best of the rest with an average of just $3,500 in 14 theaters. Baaghi earned an average of $3,041 in 78 theaters. The Wait only managed an average of $2,843 in two theaters. A Beautiful Planet missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,635 in 137 theaters. It is an IMAX edutainment documentary, so it might last a long time in theaters. Papa: Hemingway in Cuba will disappear from theaters quickly after opening with an average of $1,462 in 325 theaters. Viktoria was even worse with an average of $1,234 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Green Room expanded to nearly 500 theaters and that helped it cross $1 million over the weekend. However, its theater average is below $2,000, so it likely will see a drop in its theater count this weekend.
  • Compadres dropped 53% during its sophomore stint, but it still hit $2 million over the weekend. $3 million is likely, but $4 million is not.
  • A Hologram for the King expanded a little and reached $2 million. It should have no trouble getting to $3 million, but it will also see its theater count drop significantly from now on.
  • Everybody Wants Some just managed to top $3 million over the weekend. This is great compared to most limited releases, but a lot of people thought this film would expand truly wide.
  • Eye in the Sky reached $15 million since this time last week. This puts it ahead of Eddie the Eagle on the yearly chart and it remains the best limited release of 2015.
