Theater Averages: Zootopia Knight a Theater Average Champion with $19,614

March 9, 2016

Zootopia

Zootopia not only earned first place on the overall box office, it also topped the theater average chart with an average of $19,614. The only other film to earn more than $10,000 per theater was Knight of Cups, which earned an average of $15,138 in four theaters.

None of the rest of the new limited releases were all that close to $10,000. Trapped came the closest with an average of $5,875 in three theaters. Cemetery of Splendor earned an average of $3,890 in two theaters and it was still above average for the weekend's limited releases. Songs My Brothers Taught Me earned only $3,430 in one theater over the weekend, but $6,180 during its five-day opening. Behind the White Glasses was right behind with an average of $3,420 in two theaters. The Boy and the Beast only managed an average of $2,248 in 122 theaters, but it is not uncommon for animated films to struggle in limited release. Likewise, horror movies rarely do well in limited release and the latest example is The Other Side of the Door, which barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,218 in 546 theaters. The Wave wasn't as lucky with an average of just $1,828 in 33 theaters. Mekong Hotel was well back with $999 in one theater, while White Lies earned an average of $870 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:
