Theater Averages: The Lady in the Van tops Yearly Chart with $18,066

I know it is early in the year, but The Lady in the Van has set the record for best opening theater average for 2016 at $18,066. That record likely won't last very long, but it is good for this time of year. The only other film in the $10,000 club was the overall number one film, Ride Along 2, which earned an average of $11,100.

There were only two other new limited releases that we have numbers for. Detective Chinatown opened in 33 theaters, which is a lot, but it managed an average of $8,493 and that is a very solid start. Band of Robbers, on the other hand, was playing in 17 theaters, as well as on VOD. The latter is largely responsible for its average, which was a mere $872.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Theater Average alumni:

• It took a month and a half, but Macbeth reached $1 million in its limited release run.
• Youth got to $2 million since this time last week.
• Likewise, Spotlight hit $30 million over the weekend, putting it ahead of A Walk in the Woods for the year.
• The Big Short got all the way to $50 million over the weekend. This is better than Jupiter Ascending finished with and if it can get past The Perfect Guy, it will enter the top 50 for the year.
