Tuesday Previews: Creed Sets Record with Good Dinosaur Close Behind

November 25, 2015

Creed

Creed set a record last night with $1.4 million in previews. That's the biggest box office for Tuesday night previews before the Thanksgiving holiday. Before you get too excited, there are simply not enough similar releases to judge this result or use it to predict the film’s opening weekend. It’s better than the $1.0 million Horrible Bosses 2 managed last year, but less than Dumb and Dumber To’s $1.6 million from earlier that month. Hopefully Creed’s reviews will translate into positive word-of-mouth and that will help it over the weekend.

The only other wide release that had Tuesday previews was The Good Dinosaur, which managed $1.3 million. This is more impressive than Creed’s opening, because family films rarely do well during midnight shows. In fact, this is a better opening than the $1.2 million Frozen managed in 2013 (the previous Thanksgiving preview record). The reviews are amazing, but many critics are saying it is a kids movie, rather than a movie aimed at adults that kids will also enjoy. Pixar movies are usually in the latter group.

The final wide release, Victor Frankenstein, didn’t have previews. If you need to know why, just look at the reviews. The fewer people who see the movie early, the less damage the word-of-mouth will do.
