Home Market Releases for July 21st, 2015
July 21, 2015
I can't wait till the TV on DVD releases start coming out. I will finally have something to talk about on the home market. This week, according to Amazon.com, the best-selling new release is What We Do In Shadows. The film earned excellent reviews and did well in limited release, but it isn't a number one chart-topper. The second best-selling new release of the week is Scooby-Doo and Kiss. ... What? From what few reviews I could find, it is better than it looks. That said, the Pick of the Week is still What We Do In Shadows.

This screener arrived unannounced, but I'm not 100% sure it is coming out this week. It is out on VOD on Amazon, but the DVD isn't sold by Amazon, which isn't a good sign. There are also no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. There's not even a page for the movie.
Reality TV. Not the soul-crushing, voyeuristic kind, but the psuedo-educational type that is only slightly better.
Of the secondary Blu-ray releases on this week's list, only Black Sabbath jumps out as something I really want. It is arguably a classic in the genre.

A Hong Kong martial arts action movie about a Kung Fu instructor who accidentally kills a man and goes to jail. He gets out when a serial killer starts killing Kung Fu instructors and the police require his help to solve the murders. The reviews are good, but not great. Extras on the DVD and Blu-ray include a few featurettes. If you are a fan of the genre, then it is worth picking up, but it is not a must have either.

Wow, that's a long name. These LEGO are popular for its genre, but even on the average week, this would be filler and I wouldn't even bother mentioning it.
Great show and Abby is my favorite character, but the full-season sets are a better deal.

It has been a few years since I watched this show regularly. From the bits I have seen, it is still funny, although not as funny as it was in the first few seasons.

This looks like a crash commercial mash-up from the 1970s that is finally getting a release on the home market, but it's not. It was made in 2015. I didn't think Kiss was a relevant pop culture item, and I say that as someone who still has Destroyer on vinyl. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, I couldn't find a page on Rotten Tomatoes. I did find a few reviews online and they were all positive. Plus there are a number of extras, including two episodes from the 1970s. If you have young kids at the right age for Scooby-Doo, plus you grew up with the show and the band, then this is definitely worth picking up.

A sequel to The Best-Exotic Marigold Hotel, which was a surprise hit when it came out in limited release in 2012. Sequels to comedies rarely live up to their predecessors. Is that the case here? Is the film still worth checking out? Read our review for my opinion.

The final film in the Flowers in the Attic franchise. ... Skip it.

This film earned weak reviews and didn't make a peep at the box office. It isn't as bad as the box office numbers look, but it is only worth a rental.

One of the better reviewed films on this week's list. It even earned an Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film. Unfortunately, it is not one of the best-selling new releases of the week. It is a contender for Pick of the Week, but it likely won't sell as well as it should.
Of the secondary / early VOD releases, Insurgent is clearly the biggest, but it is not the best. In fact, none of them really jump out as must sees.
Six Sci-fi films from the 1950s and 1960s. They are called vintage, but they are certainly not classics. The set is selling surprisingly well on Amazon.com. Then again, at that price, if you are a fan of the genre, it might be worth picking up.

The best film on this week's list. It is a comedy about a group of diverse vampires living in the modern world. The DVD and Blu-ray are loaded with an audio commentary track; more than an hour of deleted scenes, including the original short film; as well as interviews, etc. This is more than enough to be worth picking up and it is clearly the Pick of the Week.

A limited release / VOD that earned terrible reviews and flopped at the box office. According to Amazon.com, it is the third best-selling new release of the week.
