Limited Releases: When Limited Releases are Here and There
May 22, 2015
There are not a lot of films on this week's list of limited releases and almost none of them look like they will expand enough to earn some measure of mainstream success. When Marnie Was There seems like the best candidate, but it is very hard for an animated film in limited release.
Aloft - Reviews
The Farewell Party - Reviews
Güeros - Reviews
The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence) - Reviews
Love at First Fight - Reviews
When Marnie Was There - Reviews
Sunshine Superman - Reviews
This film is written and directed by Claudia Llosa, whose previous two films, Madeinusa and The Milk of Sorrow, both earned great reviews. This film, on the other hand... Given the writer / director and the cast, its terrible reviews are a terrible shock. Despite the pedigree, its reviews will kill its chances in theaters. Aloft opens tonight in two theaters, one in New York City and the other in Los Angles, with planned expansions over the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
An Israeli film about a group of the elderly living in a retirement home. When one of them has a terminal illness the others... help them. Soon word spreads about their services. The reviews are excellent and it could do well in limited release. Like most foreign-language films, its chances of expanding significantly are limited. The Farewell Party opens tonight in two theaters in New York City.
A Mexican movie about a boy, Thomas, sent by his single-parent mother to live in the big city with his older brother. The reviews are among the best of any film opening this week. However, it is a foreign-language film, so its chances of expanding significantly are very limited. Güeros opened on Wednesday in New York City with planned screenings over the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
Wrong genre, terrible reviews, and a it is playing on Video on Demand. The Human Centipede 3 opens tonight at the IFC Center in New York City.
A French film about a couple who go to a military-style boot camp to learn the survival skills needed to survive the upcoming environmental collapse. The reviews are good, but not great. Love at First Fight opens tonight in two theaters, both in New York City, with expansions planned for the upcoming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
The latest film from Studio Ghibli and it is being released by GKIDS. Studio Ghibli has an amazing record when it comes to critical acclaim and this film is earning 84% positive reviews. GKIDS has a good track record when it comes to releasing animated films through limited release. This is never easy, but their films do well enough to bolster home market numbers. When Marnie Was There opens tonight in two theaters, one in New York City and one in Los Angeles, with more dates scheduled in the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
A documentary about Carl Boenish, one of the pioneers of base-jumping. The reviews are excellent and film looks visually impressive, so this film could do well in theaters. Or to be more accurate, it could do well, for a documentary. Sunshine Superman opens tonight in three theaters with planned expansions in the coming weeks. Check out the official site for more details.
