International Box Office: Furious Accelerates Universal to $1 Billion
April 9, 2015
Furious 7 dominated the international chart with $245.05 million on 10,683 screens in 63 markets for a worldwide opening of $392.22 million. Unless the film has terrible legs, it should get to $1 billion. Speaking of $1 billion, Universal announced they reached $1 billion worldwide for the year in the earliest ever time for the studio. The previous record was May 31st, which was set in 2013. So not only did they beat the record, they crushed it. The film's best individual market was Mexico, where it earned $21.5 million on 685 screens. It also cracked $15 million in the U.K. ($18.7 million on 537); Germany ($15.9 million on 650). Additionally, the film topped $10 million in France ($11.4 million on 707); Brazil ($11.4 million on 551); Australia ($11.3 million on 255); Taiwan ($10.3 million on 80). This is an incredible run so far and could be a good omen for the upcoming summer blockbuster season.
Cinderella returned to second place with $24.3 million in 53 markets for totals of $230.0 million internationally and $397.1 million worldwide. It has already crossed $400 million worldwide, probably on Monday, but if not, definitely on Tuesday. The film has yet to open in Japan, but unless it is a surprise monster hit there, $500 million is probably out of reach. That said, the film may have already broken even.
Wolf Warriors opened in first place in China with an estimated $22 million over the weekend and $32.58 million during its four-day opening.
Home remained in fourth place with $20.7 million in 68 markets for a three-week total of $85.2 million. This film earned $3.54 million in 557 theaters in the U.K. over the weekend for a total of $21.57 million in that market after three weeks of release. At this pace, the film will reach $100 million internationally sometime during the weekend, while its international run is not over yet.
Kingsman: The Secret Service slipped a couple of spots to fifth with $18.9 million over the weekend for totals of $247.2 million internationally and $369.6 million worldwide. The film added $30.84 million during the full week in China for a total of $55.23 million after ten days of release.
Let's Get Married opened with $16 million over the weekend in China for a four-day opening of $22.91 million in its native market.
Insurgent plummeted from second to seventh with $15.5 million in 82 markets over the weekend for totals of $120.1 million internationally and $223.6 million worldwide. The film has almost matched its predecessor internationally, but I'm not sure how long it will last after that.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water remained in eighth place with $5.8 million in 40 markets for totals of $136.0 million internationally and $296.8 million worldwide. The film should get to $300 million early in the weekend, which is great news for the studio.
Focus fell to ninth place with $4.9 million in 61 markets over the weekend for a total of $91.0 million internationally.
Twenty was pushed to second place in South Korea with $4.68 million on 791 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $15.59 million.
