Blu-ray Sales: Penguins Become King in Tight Race

New releases earned the top three spots on the Blu-ray Sales Chart this week, including a tight race for top spot. Penguins of Madagascar earned first place over Exodus: Gods and Kings in terms of units, 269,000 vs 257,000. However, in terms of revenue, the pair finished in the reverse order at $5.91 million to $5.38 million. As far the their opening week Blu-ray shares are concerned, Penguins managed a very strong 58%, while Exodus managed a very healthy 54%
Next up was Annie with 157,000 units / $3.57 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 44%, which is better than expected for a live-action family film. Big Hero 6 returned to the top five in fourth place with 126,000 units / $2.52 million for the week, giving it totals of 2.20 million units / $41.92 million. Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 rounded out the top five with 96,000 units / $1.91 million for the week and 1.77 million units / 35.34 million after three weeks of release.
There were four other new releases to chart this week, led by Halo: Nightfall in seventh place with 43,000 units / $686,000. This gave the release an opening week Blu-ray share of 38%, which is disappointing for this type of release. Speaking of disappointing, Top Five only managed 11th place with 14,000 units / $289,000. That's terrible for a wide release. It did perform better on DVD, which is reflected in its 29% opening week Blu-ray share, but it is hard to spin that as a real positive. Song of the Sea was right behind with 12,000 units / $302,000 for an opening week Blu-ray share of 54%. That's great for a limited release. The final new release to chart was Vice, which only managed 16th place with 10,000 units / $163,000 giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 25%. This is terrible news for a film that reportedly cost $15 million to make and was clearly aiming for a wide release.
