Furious 7 Opens with Record $67.3 Million on Friday

Riding a wave of solid reviews and audience approval, Universal will report an estimated $67.3 million at the box office on Friday for Furious 7, based on early tallies. That includes $15.8 million from early shows on Thursday evening, making Friday itself a $50 million day for the film. If the $67.3 million figure holds, it will be the 11th-biggest day reported by a studio, and land just marginally ahead of The Hunger Games’ $67.26 million as the biggest day outside of the Summer and Thanksgiving holidays.

If the film holds up reasonably well today, it should pick up another $50 million for the day. Another $35 million on Sunday would take it to a $150 million opening weekend and a spot among the top 10 weekends of all time. For a 14-year-old franchise, that’s an incredible performance—in fact, only James Bond has a longer track record.

Among all the one-day records, the franchise crossed $1 billion at the domestic box office and $2.5 billion globally yesterday. It’s the 16th franchise to hit that mark both domestically and internationally.
